what's the best colour to go for if you have a lot of greys in your roots?

My hair is currently dyed an auburn brown but my roots are about 80% grey Sad

I have an appointment for a colour in 2 weeks and was wondering,is it better to go lighter so there's less of a contrast or stay the same? and if i go lighter would that be highlights? bit clueless when it comes to hair and i'm not ready to go grey just yet!!

that it what i am aiming for, blossom - the liberated bit, not the bad spelling Grin

I am 34 and am probably about 40% grey. My natural hair colour is dark brown and find the greys really stand out against it. Therefore, I now have blonde highlights put through. I have a short, healthy looking, chic bob. Going lighter defintely eases the re-growth. I am not ready to go grey yet. The blonde also seems to warm my complexion now that I am mid 30s

Am so glad that I found this thread :) My roots are around 80% grey/white now and require touch-up to the lovely auburn colour of the lengths every 2-3 weeks. Enough is enough! So, I'm taking the plunge and going grey. I'm planning to have a smart short cut first though, so hopefully in a few months time I'll be a sexy silver foxy lady!

am joining you! have a good inch or two of 80% ish white grey - cba to keep on pretending so am going grey. quite excited actually...

I'm 33 and have had white hair at the sides for as long as I can remember. O do the roots myself every 2-3 weeks and it currently looks fine. But my mother has the same (she's 57) and has hers done at a salon. It's starting to look not quite right, despite changing to a lighter colour and some highlights. And my gran did the same, going cold turkey on the dye in her 50's. I go through phases of wanting to grown mine out, fantasizing over how much lower maintenance it would be. But I'm a real scruff, jeans and hoodie, no make up sort of person and I think my hair is all that makes the difference between looking like an aging frump and passing for 10 years younger than I really am (HV gave me the contact number for a support group for teen mothers) [ hmm ].

Hmm

Aw my heart bleeds for you Sprinkles. Nasty old HV eh Grin

sprinkles77 · 15/06/2011 19:30

Tatty, I'm not complaining, just would be even happier if I could put as little effort into my hair as I do everything else. I saw a "10 years younger" or it might have been a "what not to wear" with someone just like me only she had the grey hair. She looked rubbish. The bizarre thing is that hospital midwives treated me as a practical geriatric having a first baby at 32, and talked about all the various risks of what could go wrong "because of my age"! Ok, off at a tangent here...

A lighter base colour plus highlights. Speak to hairdresser and consider going blonde.

i've been going grey since I was 14, I'm now 43 and have been getting blonder and blonder over the years. In places I'm about 80% grey, mainly at the front. I've often thought of going natural but I'm just too scared to try it. My hair is quite fine and when the grey starts coming through I feel like I look bald. I think on other people grey hair can look really chic, I just dread the horrible growing out stage.

sprinkles77 · 15/06/2011 22:34

Oooh, yes. When my grey bits show I look like I have a bald patch! I actually have to do a crafty comb over to hide it!

grumpypants · 16/06/2011 07:53

Well, i am now about two good inches of grey on shoulder length dark brown hair. It's really useful to see how patchy it is - really white at the front for example. am determined to get long enough to have a short bob (def can't face a pixie crop) as i have tried every colour (white blonde thro to black) and think cold turkey is the only way! wish me luck - maybe i should start a supportive blog!
