but would rather not pay for it! However, I am SCARED of the orange ladies in Boots. I buy a lot of No. 7 products, but honestly the woman behind the counter in our local branch is just a make-up caked horror, and there's no way I want to learn how to look like that!

Has anyone had an instore makeover?

I have had a MAC makeover which I loved. I wanted a rock chic smokey eye and had a photo from a magazine. I was really pleased with it and it cost £25. It wasn't a make up lesson though.

When I was in Bobbi Brown last week I was given a 'menu' of make up lessons that they provide. I think it started at £15 for 'smokey eye' lesson, and they last from 15 mins to 45 mins I think. It could be money well spent, as once you know how you want to look and what colours suit you you could go back to No. 7 and recreate.
I had a good experience at a Bobbi Brown counter last week and the make up lesson was recently featured in the Times.

Otherwise maybe you could get your library to order this make up manual for you.

youtube also has lots of good makeup lessons on there, if you search for "blusher lesson" or "eyeliner lesson" etc etc and also lots of full face ones. Some are great.

You need to look at these

She is absolutely fantastic, and is nowquite famous amongst the online make up freak community!

You need to find a Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier counter - they are fab.

Either that or find a local make-up artist (not a beautician) who can give you a lesson.

Where is the country are you?

emsyj · 24/05/2011 14:30

A lot of the counters will do it for free - it's a long time since I have asked, but last time I did you could get a free makeover/lesson at the Chanel counter.

The MAC make-up lesson is £50 and covers day and evening looks plus the cost is redeemable against any purchase you make, so if you think you might buy some stuff it could be worth it?

Have had loads of Bobbi Brown makeovers and they are fab. Learnt everything I know about make up from them. Also had one at Chanel which was good but not as good as BB.

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/05/2011 14:36

I think, though I am not 100% sure, that the ladies who work on MAC, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier counters are fully qualified make-up artists, as opposed to somewhere like No.7, Chanel etc etc where there is no requirement for a qualification.

colditz · 24/05/2011 14:39

Do do do look at my link. She's very very good and very very normal.

emsyj · 24/05/2011 14:46

Love the link, colditz!!!! how can I never have heard of her before?????

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/05/2011 14:50

Ah yes, colditz, didn't realise it was her!

Her real name is Lauren Luke and she has a couple of books out too - you can get them on amazon.

She is really good.

thanks all - I'm in the north of scotland so somewhat limited for instore options, but will take a look at the weblinks and look out for a MAC/Bobbi Brown counter on my next trip to the big city...!

Go to You Tube and search for Lisa Eldridge. She does excellent tutorials.

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/05/2011 17:20

daimbardiva - where exactly in the north of scotland? (you can pm me if you prefer not to say on here)

I am a trained make-up artist (currently a sahm though), and I might be able to source you someone to give you some help.

I know of one girl in Aberdeen, and a few others elsewhere.

Havingkittens · 24/05/2011 19:49

pixiwoo do good tutorials too. I do make up lessons but it you don't want to pay beauty counter prices you won't want to pay mine Wink - oh, and I live in London so not exactly practical for you by the looks of things!

I'd say about 75% of BB, MAC, LM, Space NK staff are Make up Artists. I know that the Estee Lauder brands hire a certain amount of non MUA people who are great at sales (just to fulfill their corporate greed!). Also, the MUAs are at varying levels so it's worth asking some questions. Some are fresh out of make up school and some have been in the industry years and work at the counters full time to guarantee their rent/mortgage/bills get paid in the feast and famine world of freelancing. Always try to get an appointment with someone who's style you admire. Don't be fooled by Benefit girls, most of those are not MUAs, and their make up is mostly shite Wink
