Beauty salon upselling - yay or nay?

Maybe this should be in AIBU but it gets a bit hysterical over there sometimes and I would like an honest answer to this.

I went for a Brazilian and upper leg wax yesterday - a regular thing for me. I had a new therapist who was polite and friendly and all seemed well. Then, she:
a) quibbled about the shape I wanted on my Brazilian, telling me it 'wouldn't make sense'. I stuck to my guns and said that I liked it so it did make sense, and she shrugged and giggled, but did what I asked

b) told me that I needed a pedicure (as obviously my hooves are in a horrendous state Hmm). This was totally unprompted by me

I thought there was an unwritten rule about criticising aspects of the client's appearance in beauty salons! Is it just me? I thought these places were supposed to make you feel more attractive, not less!
Any thoughts or experiences welcome, TIA

I'd have been annoyed by both those too, tbh. Although I struggle to see how the shape of a brazilian could "make sense" or otherwise!

Yes, I agree that the aim of going to such places is to come out feeling more attractive, not sneered at.

I hate it when you are made to feel uncomfortable in a salon by the staff. I once went to a new salon for a cut, whilst there the stylist asked me if I had done my own highlights (in a sneery voice). I hadn't. She then went on about how my colour didn't suit me and she would recommend blah blah (fine if I had asked for this advice but I hadn't). I left feeling mortified and cross that she had made me feel that way.

You should make a complaint to the salon manager as if this is how she speaks to all her clients she will soon be losing them!

Apple99, this is exactly why I thought there was an unwritten rule about commenting on a client's appearance - I have done my own hair colour at home (bought by me, applied by DP Grin) for years and have visited hairdressers for a cut when my colour has been a right old state. None of them have ever commented on it. Good thing too - you don't need to be berated for how you look when you're paying good money to look better!

I will probably just ask for my usual therapist by name next time, and leave this one to hassle someone else!

Actually, as uncomfortable as it might be, I think you should call the salon and tell them. The trouble with the client/beauty therapist relationship is that it isn't something which the salon management can monitor directly so they rely on feedback from the clients.

For her to tell you that you need a pedicure is just plain rude. And the customer is always right so she shouldn't have told you that the way you want something doing is wrong......in her opinion Hmm

I was annoyed recently when a manicurist (a nail specialist, not even a general beauty therapist) tried to 'sell' me idea of having permanaent makeup - ie tatooing - on my eyebrows! If I'd wanted it, I certainly wouldn't have gone to her but sought out someone fully qualified. Didn't go back to that salon again.
