Tops to go with roll up chino type trousers

IAmRubyLennox · 23/05/2011 16:31

Following some advice on here, I have purchased some casual rolled-up chino type things (would link to them but no longer on H&M website).

Apart from the obvious Breton top, what can I wear with them?

I am slightly overweight and unpleasant-looking.

I like to wear patterned or floaty tops as chinos are plain, you can wear quite feminine styles and not look too 'girly'

wideawakenurse · 23/05/2011 16:53

Your post made me laugh. I doubt you are unpleasant looking - you are funny though!

I have this top in the creamy colour, and have seen it in the blue in RL. It's a good top with chino's as it's slouchy, and for me baggy enough to hid my stomach.

dexter73 · 23/05/2011 16:53

Why have you posted that you are unpleasant looking? Don't be so hard on yourself.
I tend to wear plain 3/4 length sleeve t-shirts in a variety of colours with my chinos.

dexter73 · 23/05/2011 16:54

I don't think it is funny, I think it is quite sad Sad.

dexter73 · 23/05/2011 16:59

A fitted shirt would look good too.

wideawakenurse · 23/05/2011 17:13

Sorry Dexter, I read it in an ironic sense rather than sadly.

OP, sorry if I was out of turn.

IAmRubyLennox · 23/05/2011 17:21

No, no, don't worry.

Just feeling a bit washed out and middle aged. In the last few months I seem to have spiralled from yummy mummy to mumsy with no stops in between, so my confidence is at a low point.

I like the slouchy French Connection top but not sure whether I could wear it with my shoulders.

It's ok wideawakenurse, it's just that I felt a bit sad that Ruby described herself as unpleasant looking, even if it is meant in an ironic sense. Tell yourself you are nice looking and maybe your confidence will start to get better!
How about this

I really like the Zara printed blouse, dexter. Think I might order that.

Will try to be more positive too - I suppose that was quite a sorry way to talk about myself.

I can relate to that feeling, last year I was very much in the same place. DS was around 4 months old, and I felt like a mess. Every time I caught sight of myself in the mirror, I felt fed up and a mess.

However, I did get out of it though and found methods in how to make myself look and feel better about myself. Happy to share if you like, but will leave it aside if you wish.

By the way, that top tends not to fall off the shoulder if you size down. I am a 12 on my tummy (easily) but I can easily get away with a small. It comes up big.

I have some great boxy style tops from H and M , navy spotty and one cream one with little dots cut out of it. Look good with chinos

OllieWollieWoo · 23/05/2011 18:19

Nice links so far.
I wear this white blouse/shirt from H&M with my beige chinos - quite thin/floaty material so wear a vest top underneath (which keeps my tuummy tucked in) and shape of blouse is flattering - not too voluminous!

OP - have been feeling a bit like you of late. Suddenly feel v mid 30s and a bit yuk about myself. I am intending to start a healthy eating regime and up my exercise... not to necessarily shed lots of weight but to improve my self confidence.

Back to the chinos... I am wearing mine with a white fitted shirt for work, with breton Ts and plain half sleeve Ts in bright colours at weekends.

IAmRubyLennox · 23/05/2011 19:15

great, thanks all of you. I have a thinnish floaty M&S white blouse / shirt, so might give that a whirl too.

What do we think about plain white tank / vest and coloured elbow-length-sleeve cardigan? Too predictable?

(wideawake, tell me your secret methods!)

oopps, have obviously lost not only mojo but also ability to do bold type.

Meggles76 · 23/05/2011 19:23

vest / cardi combo also good IMO!

Twit · 23/05/2011 19:37

I really like the look too, but what if you have big boobs? I'm pretty sure I couldn't get away with wearing those tops.

I hope you feel a bit happier today Smile

OhBuggerandArse · 23/05/2011 19:48

I have that Zara blouse, and it is a gorgeous, gorgeous print , but not very well made - the frilly bits on the collar aren't hemmed, and are fraying after only one wear.

HugoFirst · 23/05/2011 20:02

the butterfly zara one is realyl slimy in real life

id do a t shrit tbh

ManicAnnie · 23/05/2011 20:04

If I were a perky size 8 I would wear little vest tops and flirty tees.

As a tallsize 14, I prefer long summery tunic tops. Nothing too dress-like, but the sort of thing H&M and White Stuff do very well in summer. Hip skimming, light material, pretty patterns, hide a multitude of sins Smile

wideawakenurse · 23/05/2011 20:15

Ruby, I just got myself into a routine.

However knackered I am I always get up before DH and shower/wash hair. I have decanted my daily make up into a small make up bag, with just the basics so easy to grab and apply. I found a wonder product in MAC Kohl pencils for a easy, smokey eyeliner which gives a more polished look, but in minimal time.

Hair wise, I love my Babyliss big hair, which has made me feel more groomed in a few mins.

I always get my clothes out the night before, and I have started to get together a bit of a 'wardrobe' for days with DS (I wear a uniform for work). Chino's and jeans are the main stay on my wardrobe, along with stripes, and white tops and blouses. Might be a bit predictable, but I find it easy to pull an outfit together quickly.

Not sure how old your DC's are, but I try to use their bath time to do other things, like eyebrow plucking, paint toenails etc.

I was in a bit of a place of thinking, 'why bother doing my nails etc, when I need to lose a stone'. However, I soon realised that small steps and changes were much easy to take and sustain in the long run.

wordfactory · 23/05/2011 21:04

With stone coloured chinos I do

  • crisp white shirt
  • blue shirt
-white tee -black tee

Ruby - jumping in unasked (!), this is what I've done to get me out of my style rut:

  • Brought the Shred dvd and try to do it 3/4 times a week - usually as soon as DSs are in bed. Have lost a bit of weight and toned up a lot and just feel better in clothes
  • Had my colours done - has made shopping far easier as now I just zone in on my colours!
  • Had a huge clear out of my wardrobe. Tried everything on instead of just putting it back cos I still liked it. Was ruthless and chucked anything that didnt fit or look ok. Now have far less clothes in my wardobe but like whats in there so its actually easier to find something to wear IYKWIM.
  • I didn't wear much make up but did some research on here and brought some Laura Mercier illiminated tinted moisturiser (fab), a decent mascara and lipgloss and 2 MAC eyeshadows - one which is ok for everyday and a darker shade for evening look. These 4 items have worked miracles!
  • Started trying on clothes that I would normally avoid eg different shapes and styles. Who knew that baggy linen jumpers from Zara would suit me?
  • Instead of going shopping and picking up yet another stripey t shirt, I now try and think about gaps in my wardrobe. Brought a lovely dress on Saturday (on sale). No idea when I will wear it but now have a great dress should something come up!
  • Lastly, have started wearing more scarves which seem to just smarten up a top or jumper. There are some lovely ones around (one of my favourites is a navy/white stripey one from a fiver from Peacocks)

Hope all that is helpful. Sorry about the long post - think I got a bit carried away!
BTW like the cotton tank and cardi look too!
