IPL - Laser Hair Removal - Anyone had this done?

I'm thinking about it (under arms and Brazillian) and wondered if anyone has had it done - I'd love to hear any experiences/ advice?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I'm no help otherthan to say i had a friend have it done, choose your salon carefully as the first one she tried gave her a burn. I was going to ask about the similar system that you do at home, you can buy one in boots.

knockedupagain · 22/05/2011 20:44

I've had it done. Well worth it despite the fact that I've had mixed experiences. The first place I went to was pretty ineffective. A few hairs got zapped permanently each time, but most survived. Then I went to sk:n, and I'm guessing they have a much better machine as it was far better. For my daughter's 18th I gave her 6 treatments at sk:n for half leg, brazillian, and underarms. She only needed 5 and almost all unwanted hair is gone. She's keeping the last treatment as a top up, but she's almost 20 now and hasn't needed it yet! Laser hair removal only works well on new hairs with thick roots. Older hairs with thinner roots will grow back. I don't know why customers aren't told that the best thing to do is wax/pluck out what you don't want and wait till they have all just grown in again, and then get a treatment done. That way the majority get permanently zapped, and not just a few.

The ones that do grow back tend to be much finer and less noticeable, and whilst it will never be 100% you get to a point where 5 minutes with tweezers once a fortnight is all you need to look perfect. I'm so glad I got lasered. Women spend so much money and waste so much time dealing with body hair over the years, that I think it is well worth it to be almost done with it. And no ingrowns either! Nothing sexy about a rash! I would advise ladies to think carefully about any pubic hairstyle though. Fashions do change and you don't want to end up with the pubic equivalent of an '80's kitchen.

Love the 1980s kitchen reference!

Hmm... What style though: Brazillian and hope it doesn't turn out to be a 1980s kitchen or High Bikini but then have to continue to wax/ shave underneath, rather defeating the object.. Hmmmm

I used the phillips home IPL machine and had amazing results. I only used it a couple of times and have had no regrowth now for well over a month. I used to shave my legs and underarms at least three times a week, so this is marvellous for me.
My hair is dark and fairly coarse.

moragbellingham · 23/05/2011 14:15

I've had 12 sessions - didn't workSad. I know not why as I have pale skin and dark hair!!!

jan8read · 23/05/2011 22:24

I've just had my first treatment for bikini line and upper lip/chin at No+Vello in London and chatted to the girl who was doing the treatment. Couldn't believe that Brazilian is the most popular area to be treated but could believe why people go IPL rather than waxing - it doesn't hurt - yeeehaaaa!! although she did say that when you get to the really sensitive parts it can twinge a bit.

I think you've got to be prepared to be patient as it does take quite a few sessions and more on the face cos there hair follicles are much denser here. The thought of being permanently fuzz free is sooooo appealing, so I'm just going to bide my time and see it through

MrsMilton · 23/05/2011 23:10

I had it done on my upper lip and it was the most painful thing ever - I can only imagine it's how having a cigarette stubbed out on your upper lip might feel like. Really eye-watering. I went to a top notch place too. I had seven treatments in total and, I have to say, I was thrilled with the result. Not entirely gone but dramatically reduced.

The trouble is, two years on and it's all grown back. Probably kept it at bay for about a year.

MissHonkover · 24/05/2011 11:01

Can anyone explain what (if any) the difference is between IPL and laser?

Had my bikini line lasered years ago and by god it hurt, but was very effective. Could now do with a tidy up and would love to get some other areas done.

betterwhenthesunshines · 24/05/2011 12:00

IPL is Intense Pulsed Light; less issue with burning?

Am having legs and bikini done. Hair is MUCH reduced, finer and some completely bald patches. It is sold as permanent hair reduction, not removal. Have had 5 sessions and will now prob stop over the summer as you can't do it witha tan or with a fake tan.

moragbellingham · 24/05/2011 14:16

Think I will have to complain about mine as it is old as permanent hair removal - which has definitely not happened.

betterwhenthesunshines · 24/05/2011 14:39

I had a full briefing document I had to read and sign a form to say I understood what it entailed and what kind of results could be expected. Did u get that?

moragbellingham · 24/05/2011 16:41

From memory, I definitely signed a form - what it says is a hazy recollection as it has taken 18 months to achieve nothing much in the way of results.
The literature states that 60- 95% of hair is removed after the recommended number of treatments. I had double the number recommendedConfused

NellieForbush · 24/05/2011 22:00

I've had laser and IPL. They are different. Can't explain how.

The IPL made not a jot of difference and hurt like a bastard my skin was red for days afterwards.

The laser is less painful than waxing and no redness afterwards and I'm really pleased with the results. In fact its probably the best money I've ever spent.

The darker and thicker the hair the better so (I'm told) the bikini line gets good and fast results.

smartyparts · 24/05/2011 23:40

I have got an home IPL machine. It is bloody marvellous.

I last shaved my legs on 8th April! They are still hair-free!

Am pale skinned with dark hair.

It was worth very penny!

MrsGerardButler · 24/05/2011 23:47

MIL is thinking of having this done and she's been quoted £100 per session, and recommended to have 6 sessions. I was Shock when she told me this. So can I ask how much you paid? She lives in a small town in Scotland, so it's a local salon, not a chain.

AmyStake · 25/05/2011 11:39

smartypants Out of interest which home IPL machine do you use?

smartyparts · 25/05/2011 13:04

AmyStake I have this which is the same and cheaper on Amazon.

NellieForbush · 25/05/2011 13:36

MrsGerardButler £30 a session which gets you 10 minutes (so enough to do chin and bikini in my case)
