I am listing my very first item, tis a dress I bought to attend a wedding, what I want to know is as a buyer of a ladies dress what information would you want to see?

I have written a description with the information that has occurred to me but I just wanted to check with Mumsnet in case I have missed something...

So?

Measurements, please, if you don't put them on when you list someone is sure to ask for them anyway. If a dress is used but has only been worn once that is nice to know too.

MaryBS · 21/05/2011 16:42

Definitely measurements as well as suggested size. Also whether it comes from a smoke-free household.

Cain · 21/05/2011 16:42

Apologies for ALL the typos. Didn't preview and using dodgy french keyboard.

Put size and colour in title.

Fill in the form for size, material, style, etc.

I'm trying to buy dresses at the moment - if I just search for "dress 14", I get 95,718 dresses. So I tick the search filters on the left hand side of an eBay page, work from the form.

Also, as a buyer I want to know actual measurements, (bust, waist, hips, length from shoulder/underarm as appropriate).

Good luck!

Massive X-post!

Cain · 21/05/2011 16:45

Ah Higgle I have put that info but didn't mention non-smoker status, interesting... and thank you.

Colour. May seem odd but I just bought a dress on eBay which looked like it was blue but when arrived it was definitely blue. Don't think it was my monitor but the actual photo not taken in good light. Thankfully I still love the dress but I don't understand why the seller didn't mention in her listing that though it looked blue it was actually green.

OvO · 21/05/2011 16:50

It was definitely green I meant to say. Doh!

Cain · 21/05/2011 16:50

Thank you ThisIs I didn't put the size in the title but have filled in all the forms re materials/colour etc, have put bust aand waist measuremens in the description.

OvO, mine is a tricky colour too, on the overall photo it shows a true colour but on the close up of the relief pattern it almost looks grey, I have used the forms to give as much info as possible. I think the fabric ie silk makes it very difficult to photograph. I have offered to send more pics/info to anyone interested.

I don't actually know my neck-knee measurements and can't be arsed to get the tape mesure out , so it would be handy if you said how tall you are and where it comes to on your frame. It's all very well saying "knee length", but if you're 6'2", it's gonna swamp me.

Jonnyfan · 22/05/2011 00:14

Some folk list loads of things saying they have all only been worn once. highly unlikely I think, especially when they are in lots of different sizes. Agree about the smoking, I had to wash one item several times to get rid of the smell.

OneBadAsp · 22/05/2011 00:28

if it has any marks on it at all make sure you say, i have seen some people get completely uppity about the tiniest of marks because it wasn't mentioned in the description. and if it's a dress that can be ironed please please please iron it before you take a photo! nothing more off putting that a great description and a then a photo of something that looks like the dog's been sleeping on! I've just gone in to check if there are any bids - not a one!

This is what I've written:

100% Silk, red dress, almost floor length (on me at 5'3), worn twice, dry clean only, fully lined, side zip. I am a non-smoker. It is patterned in the fabric/stitching with a sort of leafy floral relief, feels lovely on unfortunately its too small for me now. It is a small 14, I was wearing a 12 in most other clothes at the time I bought it for my brother's wedding. Roughly 85 cm around the waist and 96 cm around the bust. If you would like more photographs/information just let me know.

I included a full length photo, a close up of the pattern and one of the label showing make and size.

Is it normal not to have any bids at this stage? Granted I only put it up at 5pm yesterday - possibly a little impatient?

I sell a lot of stuff on ebay and seem to manage to get rid of most of it.

Good photos are vital. Take one of the front of the dress - and one of the back if there is any particular detail. Also take a close up of any intricate patterns or detailing. People want to have a good idea of what they are buying.

As others have said, describe the item in detail - colour, fabric, occasion etc... Be honest and point out any marks / snags etc... this will save hassle post sale.

I always explain the history of the item and why I am selling it.

Completely normal not to have any bids - people tend to wait until last day or so - or even last few minutes.... they want a bargain!!

Let us know how you get on!

ninah · 22/05/2011 10:45

I would definitely include the name of the designer/brand

ninah · 22/05/2011 10:46

ie not just in a photo but as a search criteria

Cain · 22/05/2011 16:08

I have 'watchers'...

Going to have to stop logging in every five minutes to see if I have a bid!

The tension is getting too much and I still have 6 days to go lol. Grin

I think you need to put the size and make in the title - I will usually search for item, e.g. dress, size and then pick out the makes I want to look at.
With sizes the ones I like to have are length from nape to hem, pit to pit and waist - just across. As most sellers don't take items back it is easier that way to measure and compare to something you already have.

I'm sure you will get some bids, but they don't usually come until the end.
