Do you shop for clothes alone or with a friend?

I have always shopped alone, but I've lost my way a bit. I have recently wanted to feel less mumsy and in my attempt to do so, bought a dress/leggings combo that I thought looked good.

DH think it's "something a 19 year old would wear" and advised me to go "shopping with a friend".

I feel totally demoralised!

I'm mid-30s so not ancient. Feel stuck in a rut. The friends whose style I like - I'm not sure if I could inflict a shopping trip on them, and not sure they'd be 100% honest either. WWYD?

I've considered a dept store personal shopper before but at the end of the day I only have 40 quid here and there to spend, so I tend to trawl the lower end of the high st and pick things up sporadically.

I am also mid 30s and shop alone... I do most of my shopping online. However, I tend to get a second opinion from friends once I have got the goods home and tried them on. TBH, I take little fashion advice from DH though!!

I have to say that I would be more than happy if a friend told me she liked my style and wanted me to go shopping with her. I would ask!!

There is a website that I really like called 'wearing it today' - might be worth a look if you have lost your way a bit.

I am wearing a dress/leggings combo today and I am 38! I bet your friends would love to go shopping with you. It is fun to try on new stuff and tell them you need them to be honest.

I shop alone.

If I ever meet friends to shop we end up chatting and drinking Grin

But I know what suits me. I enjoy it. And I don't often make massive errors.

The only thing I do is sometimes buy outfits I don't need - I have lots more evening out clothes than I need.

Thanks everyone.
I will ask my friend.
I hate this lack of confidence thing. I am good at knowing what suits my body shape (thanks Trinny & Susannah) but unsure about what is age-appropriate.

I read on another thread on here that the MN Style & Beauty motto is 'better mutton than mumsy'!! Sounds good to me!

I would be wary of taking your DH's fashion advice TBH, if he's anyhting like my DH, who if he had his way would dress me like a pole dancer.

Can you link to the outfit in question? Or to some outfits that you like and we can see if they are age/figure appropriate? IMO the latter is more decisive in choosing clothes. To me a slim, tall 40 year old can get away with a much more daring outfit than a fat 25 year old.*

  • This is my opinion. Others may disagree.

Alone. I like to do a full on mooch. When I shop with a friend, I usually buy something I might not ordinarily.....and not in a good way!
