Wardrobe of SAHM staples

BibiThree · 17/05/2011 12:38

I finish work tomorrow and will have one last pay packet to spend a part of on some essentials for my wardrobe.

I'll be a SAHM, although children now in pre-school, I need to look decent for school run and day to day life. I'm a casual sort though, don't like tight fitting or too tailored.

I have work clothes, going out clothes and housework clothes (rags), so need some normal day wear that
a. will suit a short fatty
b. isn't too expensive
c. will swap well with other purchases
d. not make me look old (I am 32)

Things I know already:
no mum boots
no linen trews
no cargo pants
no crocs (not that I would)
no fleece jackets

Thank you wise ones.

I am new to this thread, what on earth are mum boots?

fedupandfifty · 17/05/2011 19:38

Most SAHMs I know go in for leggings/ tunic tops/ boyfriend cardis plus Uggs or similar.

SupersonicDave · 17/05/2011 19:42

Jeans, jeans, jeans and jeans

This is all i have to say Grin

nethunsreject · 17/05/2011 19:45

well, I am not claiming to be a fashionista Grin but I am a sahm and wear skinnies, breton type tops/teeshirts, maybe a nice linen blouse. Also a fan of wrap dresses. Easy to shove on but look good.

I tend to shop on ebay for Boden and Laura Ashley stuff, supermarkets and God forgive me, Primark.

Shoes for me are comfy pumps from Clarks or Converse style things. Tan sandals in nice weather.

nethunsreject · 17/05/2011 19:45

and yy to boyfriend cardis. GO with jeans, trousers or over the dresses. Zara have nice ones

dexter73 · 17/05/2011 19:48

Jersey dresses are really easy to wear and are very comfortable. Something like this.

thestringcheeseincident · 17/05/2011 19:49

Good jeans.
Layers - long tshirts, cardigans, jackets
Scarves
shoes - converse, ballet flats, winter boots, summer flipflops, sandals

planestrainsautomobiles · 17/05/2011 19:51

Lots of scarves along with ....

a selection of light knitwear, blazers, feminine(!) waterproof jacket for Spring / Summer to mix and match with ....

...jeans, skinny combats, 7/8ths and chinos

If you have nice cardies / blazers then you can just wear vest tops or t-shirts underneath for a quick & easy outfit.

My shoe choice is normally ballet pumps or plimsolls in Spring.

Invest as much as you can afford in a great pair of flattish leather boots (not Uggs imho, they get scruffy so quickly) for when it isn't hot - ie most of the year. My preference is chunky biker boots but whatever suits you best.

Great fitting, comfy jeans, be they Top Shop or James...

Comfy ballet flats and some Havaianas for summer.

Ditto what others have said about nice scarves.

A couple of simple casual dresses that can be glammed up a bit with jewellery or scarves for when you want to feel a little more chic - wear with opaques in winter (and boots) and cropped leggings in summer if you don't want to go bare legged. I have a soft printed dress from Velvet this one that I wear with navy leggings and is so comfy and a linen tunic type one from Zara that I am wearing a lot at the moment, often belted. In winter I like knitted sweater type ones....

Also, purely for practical purposes, again, a waterproof coat with a hood, for pushing a buggy in the rain - you may want to add wellies to the list if you live somewhere particularly wet Grin.

Mumelie · 18/05/2011 10:42

Agree with all the above!
Oasis Scarlet jeans are a great flattering fit if you prefer bootcut to skinny.
As a SAHM I live in jeans!

drivingmissdaisy · 18/05/2011 11:12

Hi I'm a SAHM and like to look smart casual all the time.
I've lots of little blazers and tend to wear these over basic tops with jeans and ballet pumps, I've lots of scarfs too which help change the look.
I love to wear little dresses and find they're easier to put on (and sometimes more flattering too) rather than trying to think up a whole outfit in the morning, I dress them down with flats and a little cardi.
Tunics and leggings are a great option, one of my favourites at the minute is this tunic in navy with navy leggings. www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Tunics-Kaftans/WL597/Womens-Stripy-Tunic.html

BibiThree · 18/05/2011 14:28

Brilliant ideas here, I'll be printing this list off come pay day and making some purchases! LOVE the Boden tunic!
