Make Up. How do you put it on?

MordechaiVanunu · 16/05/2011 10:17

I am 41 and have been wearing make up since I was about 16 so you'd think I'd know, but I'm going through a make up revamp and have bought new stuff and I'm trying new things and have realised there are so many things I still don't know.

So can anyone help with the following?:

  1. How/where do you put bronzer? I've always put along cheek bones a la blusher, but have now been told bronzer should go in the hollows you get when you make a fish face and blusher above on apples of the cheeks but no lines at all along the cheek bones. Opinions on this??
  1. I never used to bother much with blusher but have now realised as I'm older I really need it, but how do you know when it's just too much? I think I have be staying into this teritory.
  1. I've never worn eye shadow. Should I? I have deep set eyes and think it does nothing for me am I just doing it wrong? Do I need a pale colour on deep set eyes?
  1. Where do you put eyeliner? I've always worn mascara but not bothered with eyeliner, but I've started experimentig and just don't know where to put it. Along top lid only? Top lids and underim of lower lashes? Or along the inside lower rim??
  1. What colour eyeliner? Is black to harsh for day time? I've tried brown which seems quite nice and navy which I like but I fear blue eyeliner is a faux pas?? I've also bought a bronze colour and a green but Idon't think they do much for me.(my eyes are brown)
  1. highlighter. I've bough something called Glow Up from Tesco what do I do with it??

That's it for nowGrin. All advice gratefully received.

lipstick I'm an expert on and have recently made some lovely purchases so if I can help anyone with that....

Can't really answer your questions but I have two thoughts:

  1. Go somewhere and get them to make you up - am thinking of a session in a beauty salon.

  2. Experiment on yourself and take pictures, then decide which look you like.

Have had third thought; stop worrying about what is fashionable, go with what suits you best.

This lady is fantastic for make up tutorials, take a look at her channel as im sure you will find all the practical advice you need there, plus i find it easier to learn from watching something rather than from reading the instruction ifykwim. :)

I never leave home without blusher, always on the apples of my cheeks, I apply it in circular motion to avoid the dreaded "stripe". When I occasionally wear Bronzer I use the same method, I think applying it in the hollows could easily lead to "stripe" : )

I find a pale, slightly irredescent eyeshadow helps deep set eyes (Bourjois is best I find, think its Beige Rose)

I love eyeliner when Im going out, always apply it on my top lids only as I think on the bottom it makes eyes smaller. Personally I like chocolate brown as I have blue eyes and it makes them "pop". Black is harsh I think on all but the deepest complexions.

I use a dark eyeshadow applied with a flat angled brush, as an eyeliner on my lower lids, usually a dark charcoal colour. Appled only half way along, from the outer corner. That way it's a bit more subtle, and makes your eyes pop. I use a black gel liner on my upper lids, but not every day. I've never worn eyeshadow. It just never looks right on me, but I always fill my eyesbrows in, again with an eyeshadow and flat brush. Even though my eyebrows are black, it makes them look more groomed.

Pixiwoo is another great youtube channel to follow.

  1. How/where do you put bronzer?
where you would naturally catch the sun, or can dust it lightly all over.
  1. I never used to bother much with blusher but have now realised as I'm older I really need it, but how do you know when it's just too much?
Smile. Pat on apples of cheeks, and blend, blend and blend a bit more. Should look sort of naturally flushed
  1. I've never worn eye shadow. Should I? I have deep set eyes and think it does nothing for me am I just doing it wrong? Do I need a pale colour on deep set eyes?
For daytimes I wear a nude colour all over lid up to brows, and then a bronze over my lid up to crease. I do more technical stuff too, but that is everyday
  1. Where do you put eyeliner? I've always worn mascara but not bothered with eyeliner, but I've started experimentig and just don't know where to put it. Along top lid only? Top lids and underim of lower lashes? Or along the inside lower rim??
I use a gel iner (Maybelline) comes with it's own brush, or you can use a pencil. I think most flattering is along top lid only - sometimes rim/under lashes can make you look tired
  1. What colour eyeliner? Is black to harsh for day time? I've tried brown which seems quite nice and navy which I like but I fear blue eyeliner is a faux pas?? I've also bought a bronze colour and a green but Idon't think they do much for me.(my eyes are brown)
anything goes in makeup! I wear black for daytime, but brown is good for a more natural look
  1. highlighter. I've bough something called Glow Up from Tesco what do I do with it??
suck in cheeks and make fish face, blend along cheekbones. Can also use it to highlight brow bones (teeny bit) or even inner eye corners

Try having a look at Lauren Luke on youtube
This is one of her videos

This 'making your eyes pop' thing is something i've just discovered from watching QVC. Not sure anything has yet made mine 'pop'. can brown eyes pop?

Thanks for the links I'll try to watch later, but am more likely to read here in reality, so all advice gratefully received.

i think I need to experiement with the eyeliner a bit more and just make a judgement on how it looks best on me.

Toady i have tried just eyeshadow and mascara and I think it looks quite nice in a more low key way. i did just use a pale shadow on the lids only and I think this may work for me.

brown eyes can pop!

golds and greens look really good on brown eyes. Maybe try a light shimmery gold with some brown eyeliner
I am always messing about with make up - I tend to experiment at night so if it all goes wrong I can wash it off!

I put it slightly lower than where I put blusher - or if I've been in the sun and all freckly, I'll follow the freckles. Try out a few different places to put it and see which you like best. If it looks too harsh then blend it out

2. I never used to bother much with blusher but have now realised as I'm older I really need it, but how do you know when it's just too much? I think I have be staying into this teritory.
Personally, I like it to look remotely natural. If you look like you can be a drag queen, take it all off. If it really stands out from the rest of your face it's too much, imo

3. I've never worn eye shadow. Should I? I have deep set eyes and think it does nothing for me am I just doing it wrong? Do I need a pale colour on deep set eyes?
gold, blues, purples, browns for brown eyes. You don't need it if you're going to be wearing lipstick

4. Where do you put eyeliner? I've always worn mascara but not bothered with eyeliner, but I've started experimentig and just don't know where to put it. Along top lid only? Top lids and underim of lower lashes? Or along the inside lower rim??
I put it on top, v close to the lid and a thin line, not thick. Thick looks a bit too much for daytime unless it's blended out

5. What colour eyeliner? Is black to harsh for day time? I've tried brown which seems quite nice and navy which I like but I fear blue eyeliner is a faux pas?? I've also bought a bronze colour and a green but Idon't think they do much for me.(my eyes are brown)
Choose which you like more, I prefer black

  1. highlighter. I've bough something called Glow Up from Tesco what do I do with it??
Above your blusher, occasionally under the eyelids if you don't have dark circles, under the arch of your eyebrow, sometimes above the lips You only need a bit! If you use too much you will look like Tinkerbell attacked you
MordechaiVanunu · 16/05/2011 13:48

Ok, so should you not wear eyeshadow and lipstick together??

And I'll so easy on the highlighterGrin

OP posts:
brighthair · 16/05/2011 13:54

you can wear both - but strong eyes OR lips, not both

so if I was wearing smoky eyes, I would wear light gloss. Red lips, I would do pale eyeshadow and a bit of liner
both together can = drag queen

bristolcities · 16/05/2011 14:07

Put bronzer in a 3 shape (and the other way round for the left side) with the top of the 3 being the forhead, the middle being the cheek and the bottom being the jaw line and blended in to the neck, works every time! then put a oral blush on the apples of cheeks starting no futher in than were the pupils would line up.

Ruby and Millie do an eye shadow pen in gold which is brilliant for brown eyes and really eary to use. an also be used to give a soft eye liner effect.

alizee · 16/05/2011 14:14

if you're a bit unsure about eyeshadow get a very neutral palette and choose a shade close to your skin colour to start with. you can always experiment by applying a lighter shade on the inner corner of your eye and a darker shade on the outer corner.

Gillybobs · 16/05/2011 14:15

Definitely agree with brighthair, if Im wearing eyeshadow I just wear a very light lipgloss, full lipstick looks too much. And vice versa, if Im wearing proper lippy just a bit of eyeliner and mascara is plenty. Similarly, if Im wearing a strong blusher would avoid bright lips or eyes, going with just a bit of nude lipgloss and mascara on eyes.

Im a great believer that you should only wear strong colour on one bit of the face at a time.

Havingkittens · 16/05/2011 14:38

Yep, bronzer goes where the sun would naturally hit your face. Use a soft large-ish brush and always go for a domed brush rather than one cut bluntly across as that will give you hard edges. Brush over top of forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Don't brush over your whole face as then your face will be darker than your neck and probably a bit tango. Bristolcities method sounds like a good guide.

Only contour powder, which should be a neutral beige with no orangey underdones, goes in the hollows of the cheeks and should be applied subtly so it doesn't look like you have two brown stripes!

If you have deep set eye, then yes, pale colours on your lids is the way to go. Something like MAC's Naked Lunch which is a neutral shimmery peach which really brightens the eyes.

It's definitely a good idea to have an appointment at a beauty counter. Advice on a forum is tricky because make up is very personal, depending on what you look like, your taste, your personality and lifestyle.

MordechaiVanunu · 16/05/2011 16:47

Oh contour powder?? I don't have that and have never heard of that. Do I did that as well as blusher and bronzer? Gawd this is complex.

Today I've been wearing a pale beige shimmery eyeshadow with just mascara and no eye liner i think it does suit my eyes actually.

I know an appointment at the beauty counter would be best but I'm loathe to do it as I know I'll end up spending a fortune and just lately I've already spent loads on make up so just wnat to know what to do best with what I've got.

See, I'm already thinking 'shall I go and buy that MAC Naked Lunch eye shadow....?' I spend a fortune and I've made so many mistakes. I have a make up bag of normal size I use daily and then a suitcase proportioned bag full of mistakes worn once and discarded purcahses.

I spent a lot of time on make up alley whch ended up nearly bankruptng me. I love make up alley for the product reveiws but can't get on with the forums or any advice.

I do love make up though.

I have to not enter Selfridges beauty hall. If I say I have a plastic chest from Staples which is 10 drawers, and it is FULL of make up, you might get close to what I have. Dad says if MAC have a supply problem, he'll send them to me!!

MordechaiVanunu · 16/05/2011 20:34

Make up is great. It should get recognition officially as a valid interest and hobby.

A very expensive hobby.

I think I may now go and play with my eye liners.
