Long locks when you're long in the tooth?

I'm 37 and I have long, past the shoulders, messy wavy hair. It's been in this style since I was about 14, with some variations (fringe / no fringe, layers / no layers, straightened / natural etc).

I've been thinking about having a shorter, more 'grown up' do for a while but when I mention it to my DH he almost shouts 'Noooooooooooooo!' He says he loves my hair like this and really really doesn't want me to go short.

But I keep wondering if it's a bit undignified to keep my hair in such a 'girlish' style as I'm entering middle age.

What do you lot think?

my hair is longish and I'm a lot older than you

Oh, bugger the rules! Mine is the other way round but I still offer myself as an example. I currently have very short hair but fully intend to grow it long in my later years, as a direct response to the old chestnut about long hair on older women being bad. I'm going grey already; I dye it at the moment but will let it revert to grey and a strawlike texture when I grow it.

I'll mutter and shout at people in the street too.

Do whatever you like. But don't change your hair because you feel you should or that society expects it.

Me too. It's more about how you look and feel than numbers. Surely, if you like it and your DH does too then it's fine. 37 is no age. It's not like you're heading for 16/60 syndrome just yet Wink.

I'm older than you and get lots of compliments on my long wavy hair. If you still like your hair, and your DH obviously does, don't feel under pressure to conform.

I remember having short hair, and getting up at 6.30am because I couldn't go out of the house without styling and blow drying. The pre-Raphaelite look is a heck of a lot easier Grin

Sod the 'age rules' for long/short hair! If the style suits you and you're happy with it, to hell with everyone else and their opinionsSmile

Jerry Hall's locks where still looking pretty darn fab the last time I looked tooGrin
