Would you sell your old wedding band & engagement ring and if so where?

My Mum has her platinum wedding band and platinum engagement ring with a 0.7 carat diamond. Now she's divorced she doesn't want them and could do with the money. My sister is a bit sentimental about them whereas I think she should sell them and do something lovely with the money!

WWYD and if she does decide to sell them where would she go to get the best price?

Yes I sold mine and brought the kids new coats for winter as the idiot didnt care enough to pay maintance. This was 7 years ago. Not sure where gives best price.

She should sell 'em. You're right and your sister's wrong! They're only things. No idea where though, sorry.

I would sell them at an auction. Jewellery is fetching good prices at the moment.

I've just taken my mums engagement ring back to the jeweller who designed it and they are going to re-sell it for her - even though it was years ago and take a commission on the sale.

She's also just recently taken another diamond ring to a vintage ring shop in Bath where they are selling it for her on sale or return.

Try antiques centres...its right up their street, but expect to only get 2/3rds of any valuation you have.

Didn't sell mine. Had them re-fashioned into a lovely ring which I am complimented on, as it's so unusual.

Hello, I'm a jeweller- just wanted to give you my tuppence worth. These are all very valid points above.
I'd only put the rings to auction if they are antique. If it's not a 'specialist' ring then there's probably no need- you'll just have to pay the auctioneers fees on top of your final selling price.
Do not use these crazy cash for gold conartists. Seriously, it's mental how much they underpay. I'd recommend going out with your mum and canvassing a few jewellers to see if they would buy it off you. Current scrap price is £795 an ounce for Platinum and you'd prob get a couple hundred depending on clarity of your diamond.
Ask whether they are planning to buy it as scrap or to sell. If they're buying to sell then they should give you a higher price- scrap price is the bare minimum that it is worth.

If your sister is interested in having them you could ask a jeweller to value them and she could buy them from your mum?

Precious metal prices are all an all time high so if she would like to make some good money then now is probably the time to do so.

If you need any pointers/advice, feel free to pm me

Thanks so much everyone for your advice, it's really appreciated!

Will definitely suggest to my sister she buys them if she wants to keep them in the family - that will be the last we hear of it if I know her!

They're Tiffany rings and I had a look online and they seem to sell for quite a reasonable price second hand, there are a few specialist websites, although I appreciate they don't buy for anywhere near what they sell for.

If they're Tiffany then they will have a collectable value, I'd definitely consider canvassing jewellers (with a view to them selling them on) and speak to an auctioneers as well.
