Dresses

i've today gone through my wardrobe looking for evening clothing for my two week summer holiday, well I'm quite depressed now, as I've only found two dresses and two pairs of linen trousers.

I've not been on holiday for five years, so at a real loss on what to buy. I know there are lots of holiday clothes in the shops but really don't know where to start. I like dresses as you don't have to think about matching up tops and bottoms.

Also, I'm in my early forties so don't want to dress too old, but don't want to wear something that is just too young! I don't want people laughing at me.

All help will be sooooooo greatly appreciated.

Do you think this Zara dresses is too young for me?

It's a really lovely dress, but I would want it to be on my knees which could be described as croissants (no chance as I'm tall!) - I'm in my mid forties.

I agree with BigTillyMint, I'm finding a lot of dresses you buy online turn out to be uncomfortably short. The Zara one looks like it might be.

try Kew.

I am late thirties and a size 8 and I would not wear that dress as it's too short. Sorry, but I think it is more for a twenty something tbh.

What sort of figure do you have? The style of dress you choose will depend largely on that.

Agree re the Zara dress - it's the kind of thing my 17yo wears to school. What kind of holiday are you going on?

GeneHuntsMistress · 15/05/2011 08:23

I'm with the others here, I prefer a dress on my knees - on holiday I go to above knee but majority of dress in high street are just SO short. I wonder if it's due to the fashion of wearing leggings with dresses?

I'm afraid my summer wardrobe is almost exclusively Boden, built up over the last 5 years (since i became a mum haha). Nothing from this season as I don't like the prints they have been doing. Which is a shame as they make the right length for me at 5'7" and suit my body shape. Their summer dresses I have got are all cotton which is a must, phase eight do rightlength too (ie just on knee, not the yukky Per Una length) but they do all manmade materials so no go in the summer. And the ones I got from 5 years ago still look new, so a good investment and each year I dig them all out and they never look dated.

Perhaps have a look on eBay? Oh i have also got 2 dresses from Great Plains last year in the sale which are really nice, and a joules dress which is above the knee but fine for hols or flat sandals and tanned legs. Worth checking out those two shops too?

moragbellingham · 15/05/2011 10:52

I've got dresses from Boden, Joules, Great Plains, Phase 8, Monsoon, White Company - all respectable lengths for summer toddler chasing.
I do like your dress though and have seen other similar ones in Zara - how tall are you?

Hi, thanks for your comments, I had those going through my mind!

I'm 5' 9" and a size 10 or 12.

I'm going to trawl the stores you mentioned.

Thanks
