my hairdresser has refused to give me highlights ...

What the ...? I am bored of my hair (curly, very dark, all-over hairdresser dye to pretend I am still young). I suggested to my hairdresser last time that she give me a few highlights or lowlights just to perk things up a bit and she said no, because that would require using harsh chemicals. On reflection I don't think it can be a salon-wide policy, or even a very common one - has anyone else ever been refused something at their hairdresser's? Why would they refuse to do highlights?

unless it wouild totally ruin your hair or cause you t go bald i can't see why they would refuse.

I would suggest trying somewhere else.

That's weird,

Is your hair in good condition?

minibmw2010 · 14/05/2011 18:34

Maybe because your hair is curly and so she doesn't think the highlights or lowlights would work well with it? Odd though. Maybe just get a second opinion from another hairdresser.

southeastastra · 14/05/2011 18:34

i've had hairdressers that can't highlight over dye - unless they use bleach. could it be the same?

vjg13 · 14/05/2011 18:58

I think she's being really helpful and not wrecking your hair and turning it orange.

madammecholet · 14/05/2011 19:11

get a second opinion......sounds like it was out of her range of expertise.

mumtoted · 14/05/2011 19:34

I am a hairdresser, and yes you would need bleach to lift a tint. I'm not keen on using bleach with foils as the bleach expands as it naturally heats up, it can leek out of the foil, it needs to be watched carefully and washed off at the right moment. Busy hairdressers can find this a problem. Its not difficult but just a bit tricky.

bethelbeth · 14/05/2011 19:37

If you have very dark hair I don't think that highlights/lowlights would really look right to be honest- a bit stripey?
You would be better adding a tint to give it a bit more warmth or shine if need be.

I disagree that highlights would not look good, depending on what kind of highlight.

However if you are very dark, blonde ones would not look good. She would have to use bleach and bring you up to a yellow and then tone them, and over time the toner might reduce so they wouldn't "last" well and might end up faded and yellowish.

She should still be able to do it though if that's what you want.

She might be concerned about colour build up - does she run it through most times? If so she might only be able to bring you up to a dark orange even with bleach - that could be a problem. Even then, if you wanted some red highlights for instance, she could then tone them (and that would give your overall colour a boost too and a nice sheen)

I'm not a hairdresser, so any hairdressers please correct me if I've got any of that wrong, this is all based on my personal experience of being various colours over the years! I was very dark at the end of last year with lots of build up and i was refused caramel highlights, but instead had red slices. I then went on to strip my hair of all colour using ColourB4 and now I'm a golden base colour with blonde highlights, the overall effect being quite blonde so NER NER I DID IT ANYWAY! (Sorry, childish moment there, but I dont like being told I can't do something Grin )

if uv had it permed and died n permed and dyed again then maybe she was right not to allow u highligtes, the structure of the hair wud have been to damaged and if ur hair is dark then to use highlites she wud have had to use bleach with a 9% with a prelightener to get wat u want which can be very harsh, why dont u go back and ask to see if she will give you some extreme conditioning treatments to perk ur hair structure up a bit then maybe in a couple of months or so u might be able to have ur highlites??? xx

rachyaimeelou · 15/05/2011 09:51

sorry not 9% i think its 30% that they have to use which again is very very harsh

mumtoted · 15/05/2011 11:33

No such thing as 30%. I think you are confusing your vol with %.

cruelladepoppins · 15/05/2011 19:51

Ahhhhh. Thanks all for your contributions. I see now.

Re whether it would look good - my sis has hair almost as dark as mine and had 2 different collours of hl/ll put in a couple yrs ago and it looked gorgeous. She had long hair with a bit of a curl. It was done somewhere v posh, mind you.

But anyway sounds like technically/ trichologically maybe a wee bit challenging ...
