Foundation - favourite brands

This excellent article www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/apr/30/sali-hughes-on-foundation has made me realise that the reason I have my tideline is because I'm using the wrong shade. Looking now for a more yellowish, lighter colour but interested to hear of favourite brands I should be considering.

bareminerals - use all their products but started with the foundation powder and mineral veil. Its pricey but lasts for months and is so good for your skin. It gives a lovely airbrushed look but not too heavy and stays on for ages.
Pop into your nearest department store and get them to try it out on you (I go to Debenhams).

Do you want a 'proper' foundation that is covering your skin or something just to 'pep up' (if you like) your skin rather than having coverage? I only ask as I hate wearing foundation, it makes my skin feel clogged and it tends to slide off after a bit, so I wear Soap & Glory Bright Here Bright Now which I think can also be used as a primer. It's a much cheaper version of Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and, I've found for me, much better! Hth's!

OH god! She's been brainwashed by Bobbi Brown. Yellow based foundations do NOT work on everyone, especially not those with a rosy complexion. FFS!!!! This is one of my pet hates (in case anyone had missed that in the past. lol)

My favorite brands are Lancome, Chanel and Laura Mercier. I don't like a lot of MAC's foundations but do really like the Face & Body (sheer) and Studio Sculpt (high coverage) foundations that they do. Those are the main ones I carry in my kit.

BTW, you know that little box to the bottom right of your message which says "Convert links automatically"? If you click that it will turn your link into a link Wink

i bought some esteelauder light after asking on here and it's the best i've ever used, just works

tidlines are awful!

southeastastra · 14/05/2011 20:16

the article is like something from jackie magazine Grin

BelleDameSansMerci · 14/05/2011 20:22

I have to whisper this but No 7 Protect and Perfect Foundation is pretty good. I've got all sorts by Lancome, Chanel (gives me spots), Guerlain, Dior, Clinique (more spots) and YSL but I still can't find one I really like Sad

So, slight hijack, I've got oily skin but I'm old (45) and very fair - any ideas anyone? I like light cover but tinted moisturiser doesn't do it these days!

Havingkittens · 14/05/2011 20:27

Do all Lancome foundations give you spots? Teint Idole Silky Mat is nice, light coverage and good for oily skin. Why don't you ask for a sample at your local counter? I've also recently fallen in love with the Teint Miracle which is quite flattering on older skin - I'm 41 and also have oily skin and find this looks really nice on my skin. I have acne anyway so I don't think any foundation in particular gives me spots. I just have them regardless of what I use Sad

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser gives more coverage than most, they do an oil free version and it comes in really pale shades too. Pricey, but really good.

BelleDameSansMerci · 14/05/2011 21:08

I'm ok with Lancome - I've got the Teint Miracle but I think I've got the wrong colour. I'll try the Teint Idole SM and Laura Mercier. Thank you. Smile

Jellyrollgumdrop · 14/05/2011 22:15

CHANEL CHANEL CHANEL!!!! after trying practically every brand on the market finally found one thats not cake thick or heavy, its the mat lumiere one, cant rave about it enough....& I dont work for Chanel Smile

follyfoot · 14/05/2011 22:16

Estee Lauder for foundation, Laura Mercier makes divine tinted moisturiser.

TeaOneSugar · 14/05/2011 22:31

Clinique's new tinted moisturiser is lovely, but for a foundation I use estee Lauder double wear light.

I haven't used it but clinique do an anti blemish foundation, for oily skin, and they are usually really good at giving decent sized samples. I never buy a foundation without trying it out for a couple of days, it's too expensive to make mistakes with.

petaluma · 14/05/2011 22:37

Used Lancome on and off since I was 15. I flirt with other brands but always go back to Lancome. I generally find it's the powder which makes the foundation though - and that's always got to be Chanel IMO.

Celery · 15/05/2011 07:04

Having tried many different high end brands, Chanel, Dior, Laura Mercier, Chantecaille, By Terry etc my absolutely favourite brand at the moment is Bourjois!

Favourite high end, Diorskin Nude

Favourite all time, Bourjois Healthy Mix, for a tenner. With Bourjois 10 hour sleep effect running a close second.

Agree with Jellyroll - if you are looking for yellow based then Chanel are best, and agree Matt Lumiere is the bees knees.

I can't wear any pink based foundation but took me nearly a lifetime to work this out - so many are targeted at the traditional English Rose complexion but that is not me!

chipstick10 · 15/05/2011 08:23

I have the sort of skin tone that can just about get away with Pink toned and yellow toned foundation. Personally i prefer and wear yellow toned, its more flattering. I wear mac studio fix, and mac face and body. Also Chanel matt lumiere. I also wear mac tinted moisturiser.

ManicAnnie · 15/05/2011 08:59

I ran out of Chanel Vitalumiere a few weeks ago and decided to look for a cheaper foundation, as I was breaking the bloody bank buying it. I saw someone on here recommend Boots No.7 Lift and Luminate foundation. Best beauty recommendation I've had in ages (thanks, whoever it was!). It is better than Vitalumiere, imo.

Rindercella · 15/05/2011 09:06

Estee Lauder Doublewear is a miracle worker. I have had seriously bad roscea and Doublewear just makes it disappear. People have watched in amazement as I have applied it - from crappy, red, spotty skin to beautiful, smooth, near blemish free skin in a few seconds. No tide marks. It looks natural and light. Don't leave the house without it.

chipstick10 · 15/05/2011 10:05

Also i only apply foundation where i need it.

Ambi · 15/05/2011 10:18

I've only started wearing it, I don't really like the feeling of it, but I've started mixing it with some shimmering day cream and it looks anf feels more natural. I don't really buy into the brand mentality though so can help with your opening question, I buy any brand as long as the colour matches.
