have never been any good at buying coats. just dont seem to get it right. however as yesterday was very showery i realised i do need something, esp for work as have a bit of a walk from car to office. so was wondering, are trench coats/macs a bit 'over'? have seen this on offer but something about it is making me unsure - did i read something about double breasted not suitable for certain people??

so what do you think, or can you suggest any alternatives? dont want to spend £££ unless can also wear with jeans etc when not at work.

thanks muchly!

I know it's a matter of personal taste, but I am not keen on a classic trench coat. I think they look a bit Inspector Clouseau.

Double-breasted supposed not to be suitable on people who are larger or with big norks, but I guess you have to try and see.

Personally I would go for a properly waterproof coat, preferably with a hood (why shell out on a trench coat when you'll still need an umbrella?).

Personally I like the Boden type (I have a violently colourful printed one that has lasted for years, and I wear it almost every day as my cycling coat) and Lands' End - am aware that lots of MN'ers think they are frumpy but hey, compared to a stone-coloured trench-coat? Sorry, letting personal prejudices get the better of me Grin .

Here's a couple of examples.

Boden - usual wild patterns but also a nice poppy-red and a sunshire yellow
