We are each going to pick a fake tan from the list (you can add a different one on if it's not already on the list)

Piz buin gradual self tan (can be found in Home Bargains)
St tropez every day
Olay Touch of Sun
Neutrogena Nourishing Glow
Maybelline Dream Sun Glow
Boots Holiday Glow
L'oreal Nutrishimmer
Garnier Summerbody
Johnsons Holiday Skin
No 7 Naturally Sunkissed
Dove Energy Glow
Nivea Sunkissed
Body Shop Cocoa Butter Everyday
Clarins Radiance Plus Body Lotion
Clinique Daily Moisturiser
Ambre Solaire Express Bronze Spray
Vita Liberata Silken Chocolate (can be found in Boots)
Palmer's Cocoa Butter Natural Bronze Tan
Clarins gel/milk/cream/mousse (these are proper tans unlike the gradual body lotion)
Clinique Tinted Lotion
Clinique Airbrush Spray
St Moriz tan (can be found in Home Bargains)
Fake Bake
St Tropez normal self tan (if you spend 20 quid in Debenhams on St Tropez they were doing a free spray tan)

To take part in the challenge you need to follow these fake tan rules:

  1. Wax or shave at least 24 hours prior to application.
  1. Shower and exfoliate using non-oil based scrub (check the ingredients for oil, petroleum etc) and exfoliating gloves or special exfoliating sponge.
  1. Moisturise thoroughly and allow to sink in (even if you are using a gradual tanner)
  1. Apply extra moisturiser to
knees/elbows/feet/ankles and allow to sink in.
  1. Apply fake tan/gradual tan using tanning mitt. Start at your neck, working down in small circular motions. Work down your torso, onto your legs, lightly glazing the product over your ankles. It is best to apply self-tan to the front of your leg while your knee is bent, but when applying to the back of your leg make sure it is straight. Apply product at the bottom of your leg moving upwards in small circular motions.
Apply self-tan to your back using the reverse of your gloved hand. Working from over your shoulder in circular movements and the bottom of your back in circular movements. Mix 50/50 fake tan/gradual tan and oil free moisturiser (I use Johnson's 24 hour moisture body cream with shea butter which is half price in Boots at the moment) when doing problem areas like knees, elbows, ankles and feet.
  1. Wipe the palms of your hands with a baby wipe so you don't end up with orange palms. You can use some St Tropez tan remover first if you wish.
  1. Allow to dry for 20 minutes before getting dressed in loose clothing. Keep skin completely dry and avoid water contact, sweating, drinking hot drinks and brushing your teeth whilst it develops.
  1. Use the oil free moisturiser twice a day to prolong the life of your tan if not using a gradual tan.

Oh and then report back results here on colour, patchiness, streakiness, smell, ease of application, how greasy it is, how long it takes to sink in and dry etc.

Oh gawd, fake tanning is such a chore, isn't it?

WowOoo · 11/05/2011 13:40

Well, this morning I did myself (but not my back!!) with Clarins cream and am looking fine so far.

Have broken some rules - I simply used my hands and not a tanning mitt and I washed palm of my hands and didn't use wipes.

I always use a moisturiser mix over dry bits like my knees.

nappyaddict · 11/05/2011 14:49

If it all goes disastrously wrong I can recommend the tan off mitt.

mum2supercharlie · 11/05/2011 21:29

I swear by latex gloves to apply. Used to have a mitt though.

nappyaddict · 11/05/2011 22:49

Better results than a mitt?
