I think it's when you put your hair in a tight ponytail right on top of your head. Then you simply cut however much you want off the end.
It will then fall in nice layers.
I may be wrong though so please don't try it until someone more knowledgable has come along. Grin

Ooh.

I did this once back when I "had" to wear my hair in a ponytail (due to bleach breakage at the crown, looked silly, so wasn't going to wear it down!) and wanted my ponytail to be a better "shape". It gave it a nice blunt cut off point, if that makes sense.

When a hairdresser next cut my hair, they were going "WTF!" about the layers and said "who cut your hair!!!" because yes, it does layer it, but not necessarily evenly, or "properly" if that makes sense. Still, this may only be noticeable to a qualified hairdresser when actually combing through your hair in order to cut it...

Just thought I'd add that and help the OP bump, its probably no use to anyone! Grin

I did this a while back.
It does layer your hair nicely, but like Tatty says, when I went to the hairdressers, they were also like wtf happened to your hair?
When I told them what I did, they laughed and said "oh dear"
Everyone at the time said it looked nice, and you couldn't tell it was fucked when it was down.
What you do is, brush all your hair forward and tie it in a pny-tail on your front hairline.
You tie the ponytail on the side that your parting falls.
then you cut across in a straight line.
Then you need to cut into the ponytail to really layer it.
Shake free and that's that.
There is a video on you tube

Not on top of your head, kind of pointing out at the front above your eyebrows (depending on long it is). I do it when its looking a bit messy and I haven't got either time or money to go to the hairdressers.

It gives you a choppy layered look which looks fine - you do have to resist the tempatation to keep snipping though or you end up with a mullet.

Oh and yes a real hairdresser will give you plenty of 'WTF' eye rolling at the 'choppiness'!

I've done it a few times and it has always worked well, but I've never been brave enough to take a lot off. I just use it as a neat way to trim split ends in between visits to the hairdresser.

I'm going to have a go tomorrow. I have no shame.
