Can I recreate a salon pedicure at home?

I'm a bit broke at the moment and can't afford to go to salon for a pedicure. I don't really take any notice of what the beautician does to be honest, because I'm trying to keep up with her account of her complicated love life! I'm popping to Boots this afternoon what do I need to do a cheap version at home?

You need a newton's chiropody sponge, some flexitol heel balm, ermmm.. some polish? lol

I'm clueless too :o

i asked the lady who did mine why it lastest so much longer when she did it and these were her tips:

nails need to be dry so wipe with remover before you put varnish on
base coat
take the colour over the top of the nail - if it stops flush with the top it will come off more easily
top coat

littleomar · 08/05/2011 10:53

lasted, even

also those cotton sock things that you wear overnight are fun. and not scary.

Thanks littleomar, when I do it it seems to look rubbish only after a day! good tips.

Ped-egg, which I bought at Boots. Make sure you use the fine side too at the end. Then get really good heel balm. Apply generously, massaging feet as you go along. An extra application, then put on thick socks for at least 30 minutes. That would sort out the skin.

Wipe nails with polish remover, then base coat. Let it dry thoroughly before applying colour (just over tip, as littleomar said). Again, dry thoroughly, before top coat. I find it lasts longer if I apply the polish thinly. Lastly, after the top coat has dried well, I lightly wipe some oil (just use whatever is around, often hair oil) over.

Don't wear shoes until at least 2 hours after you're done.

Use cuticle remover. File the edges of your toenails, and use a buffer.

More of a chirpodoy tip than a pedicure one - it's me age, y'know: If you have a mouse sander (yes, the DIY thing), use that on your feet with a fine-grade paper Grin Chiropodists use tiny power tools!

littleomar · 08/05/2011 15:14

A MOUSE SANDER? i am obsessive about the state of my heels but i don't think i would be brave enough to dig ours out of the shed.

little and often works for me - have a good going over with a traditional pumice stone in the shower every day. that was a tip from a very well groomed yoga teacher of my acquaintance - he probably found it easier than i do to get into the kind of position you need to be in to scrub your feet while standing up.

Let your feet soak in a washing up bowl if u dnt have a foot spa. Put in some oil (baby oil or something) then leave to soak for 30 mins then i use a foot file then dry throughly and put some body butter on ur feet. Then dry ur nails thoroughly and use an orange stick to push back ur cuticles and cut and file ur nails. Then basecoat (dry) polish (dry) 2nd coat of polish (dry) topcoat then i spray with some polish drying oil! then don't move for about 2 hours!!! :) i'm about to do mine! I find it relaxing! have fun :)

Totally agree with all advice above.

My contribution is that my absolute it-has-changed-my-life product for my nails has been Seche Vite

Only discovered this on MN recently - a month or two back - but honestly it's made such a difference. It dries super fast, is so shiny and truly makes my nails have that properly-done finish. I've been using on my finger and toe nails. Totally love it.

garlicbutter · 08/05/2011 23:41

I know, littleomar! I swear I would never have done it if my chiropodist hadn't suggested it Grin
Works, though.
