Ideas for a funeral outfit - dress perferably

I will be attending a funeral in the next week or so. I am not a fan of clothes shopping or style, and I haven't worked in years so tend to live in casual clothes, and certainly don't have anything vaguely suitable in my wardrobe, not even shoes. I am not really up on clothes shops even - M&S does me for most basics and I like trawling through charity shops but obviously I can't expect to find something suitable there in this instance (and time frame). I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction if I say what I have in mind.

I want to wear a black dress or it could be a black pattern.

Nothing too funereal iyswim, but respectful.
Definitely nothing too styled, or formal eg not a suit.
Preferably something that will go with the only black item I already own which is a short black cardigan.

I am a size 12 (possibly 14 in some makes), 5 feet 8 inches tall, and in my mid 40s. Small busted, bit of a tummy, but good legs.

Any ideas anyone?

Would something like this work? Shoulders are covered and it's not too short but you could dress it up for future wear or put it on with sandals for a school run type dress.

I like that dress petitdonkey, though I am not sure I would wear it again often. But maybe I won't wear any dress again that often...

I wish the photo showed a model wearing it though. I am not much good at picturing clothes on people unless I can actually see them on.

I'd go with a plain black shift like this or this

Bargain here

lovely jewelled detail on neck

Linen with lace detail

subtle rose print

I think that M&S one is a bit too loud IYSWIM...

Dumbledoresgirl · 06/05/2011 16:42

So did I Tethersend. Told you I am no good at this sort of thing!

I like some of the dresses you linked to, but think I may be too old for a shift dress. Wish I wasn't!

You're never too old for a shift dress!

Seriously, if you want something different I'll look again- would you like something with sleeves in?

petitdonkey · 06/05/2011 17:16

That bargain dress linked by Tethers is surely a no-brainer - it's a lovely shape, my 70 yr old Mum could wear it as could I and if you never wear it again, £7 is not too much to lose!!

Dumbledoresgirl · 06/05/2011 18:53

I agree that £7 is no great loss. I guess I was just thinking of something a bit more forgiving on my bulging tum.

Sleeves or no sleeves, have no strong feelings about that Grin

I will definitely look into Asda to see what that dress looks like in the flesh so to speak. It is tempting to get it for £7 even if it isnt quite right.

OTOH, I had already had your thought cat re how a short dress is even shorter sitting down. I would prefer it if whatever dress I wore came at least to my knees when I sat down. I know, I'm an old gimmer Smile

Borrow something from a similar-size friend who works in an office and wears black?
