Denim maxi skirt...

Hi all

My first post in S&B but have lurked here for a while and know there are some great fashionistas on here!

I seem to be stuck in the rut of leggings and tunic dresses at the moment and am desperate to branch out more but with 2 c-sections since 2007 and never having really sorted out the post baby wobbly bits I need something 'forgiving'!

Have been wondering about a denim maxi skirt like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.newseasonfashion.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/a-skirt-225x300.jpg&imgrefurl=www.newseasonfashion.co.uk/south-denim-maxi-skirt&usg=__rG2lDUQD_hQFerkmM3ShOKHnUr8=&h=300&w=225&sz=12&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=ONPvh9xyqcWj4M:&tbnh=132&tbnw=91&ei=vMbBTeeoDYao8APomo35BQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsouth%2Bdenim%2Bskirt%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D509%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=236&vpy=165&dur=640&hovh=132&hovw=99&tx=89&ty=124&page=1&ndsp=14&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this but can't find a current one anywhere. Needs to have a bit of elastane as I'm such a bizarre shape at the mo Hmm

Any suggestions??

Thanks! x

Welcome Rachel! Don't want to discourage you, but that a line maxi shape is only ever going to work if your tall or stick thin IMO. If you want maxi, a bias or straight cut is going to be more flattering.

What's your shape and budget?

Hi Madammecholet!

Know what you mean about the line although I would never be wearing it with anything fitted on top - probably with longer tops/ tunics.

I'm reasonably tall - 5'8 but not thin sadly and shape wise I'd say I'm a bit of an anomaly really! Too much in the middle area but legs and boobage reasonable - so I kind of feel I need to layer at the moment or wear tops and dresses which gather under the bust not the waist.

Budget - not too big sadly!!

Thanks R x

I wouldn't recommend a tunic top with an a line maxi - you will just create a big tent.

If you have great legs and boobs thats where you need to draw the eye, therefore I would recommend:

Knee length skirts (A line ok/ bias cut the best) not straight as if you have a thicker waist this will make you look boxy. You'll look better with a skirt which is sat lower on the waist, ie low cut not high cut, as this will make you look longer in the body and help breakdown your waist.

I would also recommend crops for this season, very on trend, and if you have good legs get them out! Wear with tunic tops which are fitted over the bust but then skim over your waistline.

Also look at empire line dresses, v neck ones, which draw the eye to your boobs, fit under the boobs and then fall away, again bias cut good for your shape and to the knee.

I will have a rummage for you...

The other annoying thing about denim maxis (which I've had in previous years) is that they make a really loud noise when you walk because the fabric is heavier than the usual choices for maxi skirts. I know it sounds silly but the one I had used to drive me mad and I was embarrassed walking down the hallway at work (casual dress) in it!

Wow thanks madammecholet that's a fantastic list of ideas - love the maxi skirts and crops and the grey top and flared t-shirts. Sadly fitted wasitbands are a no no at the moment due to post baby wobbly tummy - need to work on that. Love the dress but my figure isn't quite up to that level of skimming!

I had these delivered yesterday which I'm pleased with - especially the crops:
denim crops
print top/dress
print top/dress
I have also branched out and got some grey leggings for a change!

Know what you mean about the tent effect of maxi plus tunic style dress. Do you think it would be too much with those top/dresses I have bought? They seem to flatter my figure reasonably without being too boring! I also like the similar style of dresses from Fat Face and White Stuff. Whilst my legs are OK below the knee the tops of my thighs are a little on the plump side so I prefer to keep them covered if possible!

Thanks so much for the advice it really helps and Sombodynew I know what you mean about the rustling skirt - I had one ages ago which did the same!!

No problem, I had 20mins spare!

Lovely crops and I love those dresses, great shape. I would not wear them with a skirt at all though, you will just create one large shape whereas its better to break the shapes down to focus on the good stuff. I'd wear without anything (with a spray tan in the summer), or with leggings (which end just below the knee rather than the ankle, or crops, skinny jeans - but nothing with turn ups, needs to be a fairly snug fit to your leg, i.e not wide leg crops.

I've bought the H&M chinos in every colour, they're so comfotable and thin fabric, very lightweight. Plus you can roll up or down as the sun permits! They have a good amount of stretch so waistband might be ok.
