Growing short hair: this is very serious, please can you help?

Right, after much much much deliberation, I have decided I ma going to grow out my very short cropped hair.

It is lovely, but, it is very fine and very straight, so the minimum fuss theory is a bit out of window as I have to cover it with gunk and texture / style it to look half decent (it's not the cut, my hairdresser is fab, t's my lifeless fine hair)

So, I javen't had a haircut for 3 months!! annd am now entering the crappy hairstyle phase.

How can I help it grow quicker, can you really do something to speed up hairgrowth or am I being silly? I only want a jaw length layered razored bob so i can either straighten it or leave it for lazy days. How long should it take to grow out? I'm just getting it trimmed and tidied when i go to hairdressers next week as I seriously look like a nesbitt now Grin

Take vitamins? Join the MN 10/10 vegetable eating threads? It will grow quicker in the summer anyway so the worst is pretty much over.
In the meantime, you want to get a plain alice band, or some mini butterfly/bulldog clips (brown or black not pink!) from Claire's. You can clip the fringe to one side and keep spiking/fluffing up the back/top -doesn't have to be too cutesy.

I grew out short hair a while back too. I put highlights in to add interest. It wasn't that painful. I used clips too and mini straighteners. I had a great hairdresser who was aware of what I was doing. Ask your hairdresser, he may have some ideas.
My hair grows slowly. It was cropped very short one Easter. The next Easter I got to a short bob.

Blossoming, you're not helping. I expect to be like Rapunzel by next Easter!

i think the key is getting it trimmed regularly..... it takes a teeny bit longer that way, but you stay looking tidy the whole time instead of scruffing it!

ive done it quite a few times.....i always told my hairdresser what i want the end result to be, and we have worked through different styles to get there on the way.

silk is right about the hair clip....but don't just nick your dds like i do...hello kitty is not a good look on someone who is 36!! Wink

Hi, I have grown my hair out over the last 2 years. It was VERY short. To be honest there wasn't much problem, although I do have a lot of hair (as opposed to it being thick).

You sound like you already have a good hairdresser, which for me was the key. I told them what I wanted and each time I went in (still 6-8 weeks) she magically gave me a new hair do without taking away much length. I never felt I was going through the 'crappy growing out' look.

My hair is now on my shoulders ! I am very happy with it.

Agree with the other poster, I started getting colours put through it to make it look more interesting.

SilkStalkings · 06/05/2011 13:35

I long to do this one day when my roots are greyer and dye with fading semi-permanents as it grows out. Then when I stop dying I'll have magically long grey hair suddenly. Of course I'll probably change my mind as soon as I've had it croppedGrin.

dairymoo · 06/05/2011 14:29

Get pregnant Grin. That's what I did as I think hair grows quicker when preggers. Still took me a year from pixie short to shoulder length and I did have crappy hair for a while but highlights/clips/hair bands made it slightly less painful.

Lipstickgal · 06/05/2011 15:04

Crop in in the back to avoid the mullet look and have it shaped into a layered short bob. You don't have to faff around and it looks nice. You can part it one side and tuck that side behind the ear thus giving the illusion of length....

varyingdegreesofdeafness · 06/05/2011 20:18

Yeah, am getting the mullet which is why I have had to finally book hairdressers app. He is going to piss himself laughing when he sees me. Have been poncing in mirror tucking hair behind ears for the optical illusion of length but it feels like i'm cheating, iykwim? Grin

Rather not resort to the pregnant thing, thanks. I'll only end up tearing my lovely long locks out Grin

I am trying to grow my hair from short again for about the 100th time. This time last year I had long highlighted hair then very stupidly got it cut into a bob got fed of that look then went for the Kerry Katona look which wasn't a good look and then got it cut off again. So have left it for the past 3months. A friend of mine left her hair six months inbetween cuts and now its way way past her shoulders. I am going to try that one I think see how long I can last. My hair is definetley in a mullet. How did VB grow her hair out. We never saw the photos.

Have grown my hair many many times. No advice, it's always hard work.

Love the Catherine Tate quote about how life can change in a heartbeat, but it takes two years to grow out a layered bob. Something like that.

LawrieMarlow · 07/05/2011 09:13

I've been growing my very short hair since December. Have been having it trimmed every 6 weeks and feel I am finally getting somewhere. Is so much harder than cutting long hair short though...

SilkStalkings · 08/05/2011 21:25

From bob onwards it's not so hard with a good hairdresser. They can do the difference between long layers and a mulletGrin and all one length generally looks a bit dowdy if it's not super shiny. Once the back is past the nape, you can get get the front and top layers cut shorter, leaving length at the back. If you have natural waves it will maximise them but with plenty of serum and a good colour it can look v glam.

have it trimmed and styled.

side parting, slick down, clips and tuck behind ears.

alice type band, scruff up the back.

i had hair extensions at this stage, and used hair pieces when i could scrape it into a ponytail.

mittenkitten007 · 09/05/2011 10:06

Highlights will give it more volume because they damage the hair a wee bit. Works like a charm.

sprinkles77 · 09/05/2011 14:54

I went through this. You need a regular trim (every 6-8 weeks) so it looked styled and not just straggly. A lesson from the hair dresser in how to style it. High lights. Depending on your hair, GHDs are useful for coping with really bad hair days. I went from very very short crop to shoulder length in about 18 months. I actually did the exact opposite of what silkstalkings did, and concentrated on growing the front, keeping the back quite short. Within about 3 months I had a short graduated bob (yours might already be suitable for this), then you can grow the back out once the front reaches your chin. A graduated bob is not that trendy, but is never really out of fashion, and with thin hair you'll have lovely manageable volume at the back, the front you can tuck behind your ears, or clip back. Or straighten it with GHDs and look super chic.
