I hate my long hair!

I would like some advice on products or anything that will make my situation better!

My sister is getting married in October and asked if I could grow my hair because she'd like to do a nice updo on each of the bridemaids. I agreed because I want to do anything I can to make her day great and can see where she's coming from, the same sort of style for the bridesmaids would look lovely and some of the ideas she's had for the hair have been beautiful and this will give me the opportunity to donate my hair again after it's all over or try perming it just to see how it looks so it's not all for nothing.

BUT, I hate my long hair! For the past three years I've had pixie cuts. I started growing it last year to reach shoulder length and have now decided to just see how long it will get before the wedding. It's currently just at shoulder level, but too short for tying up or anything.

I'm shit at anything to do with being stylish and feminine so I have no idea how to make my hair look good. I've thought of curling is a bit to be wavy, as my hair is straight with a kink (going in the same directon Angry) on both sides but it's so thick that even the tightest of curls fall out after an hour or two, with products as well. I've had it thinned so much and it's still so thick!

I'm also having to wash it every freaking day. When my hair was short I only had to wash it every 3/4 days and it would be beautiful and soft but now it greases up within hours if I use conditioner, and if I don't I can't brush my hair. My face is breaking out in spots along the areas where my hair falls which hasn't happened since I was a teen :( I've had to stop using the solid conditioners from Lush I used to use and the shampoos are disappearing so quickly it's becoming pointless to use those. I'm using tresemme at the moment because it's the only relatively cheap product that doesn't cause my hair to become a straw-like mess.

Are there any products you'd recommend? I'm at my wits end! How can I make my hair look good if I can't do anything with it? And what can I do with it? What products are good for holding styles on thick hair?

just cut it off. growing your hair to be a bridesmaid in october is madness.

I'm so tempted too, but must admit I'm a little curious to see how my hair will look longer. If I can't control it now and work out some ways to style it properly within the next month or so it's getting an inch or two off and a load of thinning out to be a bob Grin

I'm wary about getting it short again as I tend to get mistaken for a bloke a lot when it is short, no matter what style I have it in Blush The way I dress does not help and nor do the uniforms I've had to wear for work in the past. But I'm still curious to see if this can work.

So, products?

use conditioners designed for greasy hair, as it sounds like the ones you are using are too heavy, elvive do a nice light conditioners its in a pink bottle

also get some dry shampoo spray so you don have to wash it everyday

and can you get a hairband to stop it falling in your face to avoid spots until its lnog enough to tie back?

i have v. thick hair. the best thing you can do is get a great hairdresser to put some layers through it so it sits well. i am like you and hate primping so when i had long hair it helped to have a good cut. straighteners are good for giving it a bit of swish or if i had long hair now i would get a babyliss big hair thingy. products then t omake long thick hair look greasy imo. wash every day and use conditioner on the ends onlly.

good luck

Vinegar: Thank you :) Will look into that. I have dry shampoo but it's stopped working as well now. It's like once my hair reaches a certain length it just becomes a nightmare. BI use alice bands when I'm home to keep it out of my face, but because of the way my layers are cut, wearing it out in public like that is embarrassing Blush

Duplicitous: Will look into hairdressers. until now I've had a student doing my hair when I go home but she's recently become ill and has had to stop doing it until she is better :( (Sad for the girl, not the loss of my hairdresser!)

Most products are crap for thick and long hair. They're just too heavy and I haven't got the money to experiemnt with them really Confused

I will play with my straighteners again now I think too.

Would a hair piece work for a proper styling? My sister is planning to have one herself on the day, but her hair is longer and would cover the join points... I've been thinking about getting one for a while as I dislike the hassle of having long hair but wouldn't mind longer hair on occasion (like when going out). I used to wear wigs on occasion when my hair was short but I doubt that'd work on the wedding day.
