Hair straighteners and spilt ends - advice needed!

I have shoulder length wavy hair that is also very frizzy. I wash it every other day and dry it with a hairdryer and then use straighteners on it. I don't make it completely straight - just take the volume down and sort out the frizz a bit.

However, the ends are just awful - really split. I would like to grow it longer but the ends just keep breaking off. The longer it gets, the more I need to control it with the straighteners and the worse the ends get - a vicious circle!

Are there any products that might genuinely protect my hair so that the straighteners don't mangle it up quite so much? Has anyone got similar issues and managed to sort it out?

Thank you!!!

Have you tried a Babyliss Big hair? It's like a professional blow dry and far less damaging than GHD's.

you need to get the split ends cut and reduce your straightening habit

sorry

spidookly · 02/05/2011 17:46

How often are you having it cut?

If you want long hair that looks nice you need to get it trimmed regularly while you're growing it out.

I had it cut in December and then March. I am about to get it cut again but wanted to have an idea of the best way to treat it as soon as it's been cut. Last time it was cut, the horrible ends had kicked in within a couple off weeks.

I would love to use the straighteners less often. I can get a similar look if I spend a long time with the hair dryer but the school run doesn't really allow me that much time so I go for the quick option!

If I leave it to dry on its own, I end up with a look not dissimilar to Monica in that holiday Friends episode!

What straightners are you using and how old are they? Can you turn the heat down on them at all ? that would help your hair lots.

vjg13 · 02/05/2011 19:25

Do you use a heat protection hair product? and if not get one asap!

I leave my hair to almost dry on its own and then a quick babylis big hair and only use straightners if I'm going out.

I don't have any heat protection hair products. I keep looking at them in the shop but have no idea whether they work and whcih ones are the best. Are there any you would recommend?

I use this and find it ok.

I have hair that sounds similar to yours and have recently started using Matrix Biolage Delicate Care oil (contains argan oil - the active ingredient in moroccan oil) and have found that it makes a big difference. I can now get away with just blow-drying or even leaving it to dry naturally, whereas before I felt I had to straighten every time I washed. I just use the oil like I would a serum on towel-dry hair.

I think you do need to keep getting your ends trimmed regularly though if they're that split..

i use my straighteners every couple of days, i've tried a few heat protection sprays, but have vo5 atm and its pretty good :)

vixen94 · 02/05/2011 20:46

how about getting a brazilian keratin treatment..im mixed race and got the frizzy curly hair from my black mum..would have prefered her colour...anyway its really good..its like a semi permentant blow dry, lasts for a couple of months. can be expensive but ive found its worth the money and time i save..and its worth the health of my hair...look it up on google to see if there are any salons near to you, there are loads in london but not sure where u are. good luck.

I have hair almost identical to yours, but on the curlier side of wavy. I started the curly girl method a few weeks ago and am loving my frizz-free slightly curly hair - if you don't mind having curls instead of straight, it'd probably keep your hair in better condition than daily straightening
link to cg site, I think

the reason they are split though,is that you havent been using any heat protection on it,

Stuffedcat · 03/05/2011 10:33

I had this too, the ends were just snapping off!, and it has been completely sorted by using 'Kerastase - Nectar Thermique', its quite a bit more than other heat protection products but is by far the best there is- it lasts me about 6 months though (you don't need a lot I hve shoulder length hair too)

So, hair cut booked for the weekend and heat protection product on shopping list.

I've been looking at the Babyliss Big Hair on Amazon and it does look like it would be perfect for my hair. But, all the reviews sound like they've been written by people who work for the company - is it really that good? It isn't cheap and I'm nervous about spending that much money on something that doesn't work - any other users out there?

Thank you so much for all your advice - it has definitely been helpful!
