Stone missing from antique ring - advice please...

I wear it every day. I don't know how much it's worth in £, but it has a great deal of sentimental value and history.

There is a central sapphire between two small diamonds - and it is one of the diamonds that has fallen out Sad. The setting is an Edwardian twist but I think the stones may be older, and that they may have been reset from another ring.

Does anyone here have any experience of similar jewellery repairs, any suggestions for good place to go in the London area? Are there any fair trade diamonds out there? I'm rather broke and honestly there are other more important things I should be spending what little money I have on, but I do want my ring complete again... so grateful for any advice.

Fair trade diamonds are out there but if you want to be sure you'd need to ask for a certificate. Depending on the size of the diamond that you need this is is possible. If it's a small stone then they don't tend to certificate as it drives up the price of the diamond in the first place- thus pricing it out of the market.

Look into family run jewellers or independents, they tend to be the people who do the repairs for your Ernest Jones of the world etc etc.

Sourcing diamonds is relatively easy- the cut might be more unusual because of the age of the ring but I'd need a picture to be ale to give a better idea.

I'm not in the London area but feel free to message me for any advice or info (I'm a jeweller in Glasgow)

Hatton Gardens in London EC1N
price of stone depends on qualities (4 C's)
you need best match to the other diamond
get a couple of quotes from good jewellery/ second hand jewellery /jewellery repair type shops

Also check household insurance to see if it is covered. I had ring remade under insurance after losing ( and finding on 3 separate occasions) stones from 1914 ring.

I lost two stones recently (diamonds) from my grandmother's eternity ring. DH's dad got it fixed for me by a guy local to him, didn't cost v much as the stones were quite small and he cleaned it up beautifully.

Thank you very much for the advice everyone, Bethelbeth particular thanks for the expert advice and offer to message you... I'm sorry to hear small diamonds aren't certificated :(

Anyway I'll check out local independent jewellers for quotes and also Hatton Gardens as I work quite locally.

Will Hatton Gardens send me away with a flea in my ear if I ask for a zirconium? replacement instead of a diamond if I can't find a diamond whose provenance I feel happy with? Grin

Trumpton I will check my household insurance, I never had this one valued though so I never had it itemised separately. Amazed and so pleased that you managed to find the stones!

I know it was truly amazing. One was in car door pocket. Neat one was when I was running a children's ceili in a huge hotel and moving from room to room and the last one was on my seat in an airport !!!

DD had new ring with certified saphire and Canadian diamonds in for Christmas and was devasted to lose stone and then found it on my living room floor.

Lucky lucky family.

NB> If your ring is under certain value then it doesn't need to be separately listed on insurance. ( our value is £2000 but yours might be less )
