Where is good for clothes for a 12 year old girl?

Am just after somewhere that won't turn into a row with much sighing (on my part) and use of The Face (on her part)

She needs some summer stuff

Other than Primani and Internationale which are cheap shite, where is good?

I got dd's summer wardrobe last year mostly from matalan - lots of plain, no silly logo cropped trousers, summer tops. DD was a size 6 or 8 in adult stuff and they had plenty of cotton tops in that size - she's wearing a pair today which I got last year which has washed surprisingly well and is still a nice mid blue a year later.

I also get her a lot of stuff from teenage Boden in the sale - she looked through the new catalogue yesterday and they have a fab striped bikini, nice tiered skirt, nice denim skirt, great beach shorts - too expensive until the Sale though which usually starts 2nd ish of August - I will be buying stuff from there for our summer holiday a week later

New Look is good for cotton or linen crops if you can get a small enough size - they do the draw waisted ones which should pull in enough to get to the tiny waist size if you can get a 6/8

stleger · 22/04/2011 11:35

New Look...or give her 20 quid and send her into Primark alone. It isn't shoes is it... that always ends in tears.

Gillybobs · 22/04/2011 11:36

Definitely New Look and H&M for affordable stuff they are more than happy to wear

changingmynameagain · 22/04/2011 11:37

Yes it is shoes as well

New Look and H&M I'd forgotten about them.

she's with her dad this weekend was planning a shopping trip next week

That's it - so much of what her friends are wearing I just don't think is appropriate.

She has converse too. I'm not allowed any as it isn't "cool" to have your mother in the same shoes as you Grin

We have superdry stuff that we kind of agree on

But oh it is such a minefield

M & Co is the choice of my 12 year old daughter. Tesco has some good stuff in too atm. I've just bought her with my tesco vouchers:

Denim shorts
White knee length shorts
Pack of 4 vest tops (£6)
Pack of 2 80s style t-shirts

She loves them.

changingmynameagain · 22/04/2011 13:13

Must look the big Tescos then too.

Live in the sticks and our Tescos is tiny and shite

Dd is 12. We have just returned from a shopping trip to top up her summer wardrobe.

I still buy alot of Monsoon and Mini Boden. Although I am more choosy about which things are not too babyish. Bought a few bits in the Boden mid-sale last week and splashed out on a fab pair of cropped trousers she loved in Monsoon today.

Just bought her a couple of pairs of shorts from Gap Kids. They go up to a 13 and she is still a little girl. ( no curves, hips or bust yet).

She chose a pair of denim cropped jeans in H & M. I am not a big fan of the quality there but the denim is quite good. She also bought the only vest top I would let her have. I thought they were poor quality and too low in the front. We found some we both liked in M & S of all places.

She also found a great pair of shorts in Fat Face and a sun dress in Joules although 11-12 is the biggest size. So good job she is petite.

changingmynameagain · 22/04/2011 13:53

Newpup - did you need Wine?

I don't drink and I was seriously considering Wine after the last trip!

Well done and thanks for posting - gives me some ideas of where to go - I'd never look M&S for her because I had it in my head it would be too babyish

DD is 13 but has been a size 10 since aged 11, so it's not been easy to get clothes from children's departments for a long time.
We used to do Debenhams, M&S, M&Co and I think Matalan occasionally.

Now she likes Republic (25% off this weekend), and she has the odd (rare) thing from Superdry and Hollister, plus New Look is usually quite successful if you avoid the clubby things.

You may mock Primarni but today we bought the sweetest blue sundress with boats printed all over it, in a 50s style. They had several prints, all gorgeous, at £9 cheap but definitely not shite.

changingmynameagain · 22/04/2011 14:40

DD is 5ft2 as well.

Will try gap for jeans.

She has a superdry jacket too Grin

I have bucklies of getting her into a dress

I wish I could but I have bucklies.

changingmyname lol actually it was not too bad! She is (at the moment) quite happy to take my advice, not sure how much longer this will last Smile

She has great taste most of the time and as I have another younger DD I prefer to spend a bit more on quality as they both get wear out of the clothes.

Did have some discussion over a pair of summer sandals with heels but came to an agreement. She could have them to wear for a couple of parties she has coming up and a wedding in the Summer but we would buy a more sensible pair for everyday wear.

I was surprised at M & S I thought the clothes would be a bit young but they had some good things in there that DD loved! Got some vest tops and a dress.

Don't spent this much time shopping for myself! Grin

Good Luck changingmyname!

changingmynameagain · 23/04/2011 09:49

LOL @ "discussion" over sandals. I have a feeling we will be having a "discussion" too Grin

Heading into town to buy a pair of jeans for myself today and am determined to be like the little madam my DD and only buy them if I love them.

H&M - girls size to 14 and adults from size 6 - my teen often was able to get a mix. More pricey than primark but generally better quality than Internationale and New Look IMO. Some purchases from Top Shop and Miss Selfridge too - but pricier again and they grow so quickly nad change their style so much at that age that spensing a lot seems pointless.

Earlybird · 23/04/2011 13:47

Marking my place.

DD turned 10 a few months ago, and is the tallest girl in her class. Finding appealing and age appropriate clothes is a real challenge.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 23/04/2011 20:21

Earlybird, M&Co might be worth a look - they have some quite sweet nautical styles atm.
Not particularly subtle or high fashion if that's what you're after, but I find their 'older' girl things transferable to a slightly younger age group iyswim.

jellybeans · 24/04/2011 00:06

M & co is great for that age. Like Matalan too.

fyrtlemertile · 24/04/2011 15:36

[whispers] Hollister have a sale rack hidden away behind some enormous potted plants in most of their stores. I stumbled upon it when shopping with DN. T-shirts were £4.90, cardigans £11.90 or £14.90 and there were a few denim articles and skirts. (Some of which I rather liked for myself but am sadly pregnant again and far too old )

Sizing is odd using 0, 1, 3, 5 etc but as far as I can work out a 3-5 is about an 8 meaning 0/00 might be small enough. DN is 13 and very petite but she fits the clothes in there.

Sadly I have been relegated the task of taking her clothes shopping as I am deemed 'cool' by the virtue of not being her mother but I can assure you the dark, the perfume, the pounding music made an afternoon with my 3 under 3 sound like a spa day. DSIL owes me Grin

changingmynameagain · 24/04/2011 15:43

Oh I went past Hollister the other day in town.

They actually had a QUEUE and a burly guy only letting some people in at a time.

I was going in, then I couldn't be arsed to stand in the queue

Lazy, moi??

Grin
