I thought semi-permanent hair colour was supposed to wash out after 6-8 weeks

My friend did my hair for me 12 weeks ago with Garnier Herbashine and I wash my hair every day and the colour is still going strong, except now my grey roots are showing through.

And I don't like the colour anyway (too reddish).

So now I have three-tone hair: mouse-grey-too reddish

Am too skint for salons, can't decide if I'm going to commit to dying my hair at home. Was hoping the colour would wash out and then I would decide if I could live with the grey or not... but if this colour doesn't shift then I am going to be forced to dye it ad infinitum, aren't I?

:(

WWYD?

I think it can stay there longer depending on how porous your hair is.

Anyone think I should try that product that strips out colour?

It never comes out completely - especially red tints.

How long is your hair? You could grow it out, try to dye it to match the mouse or choose another colour.

LawrieMarlow speaks the truth there are times when semi-permanent colour can last longer than permanent a hair stylist told me this. It's to do with how porous the hair is and the fact that the semi-permanent colour is "deposit-only" meaning it has a very low amount of ammonia and a lot of pigment.

I feel for you as I have a similar disaster on my own head, including the red and the grey. Have you tried mixing baking soda into your shampoo? This can help break the chemical bonds that hold the colour. It will make your hair feel like straw so use a conditioner afterwards but it will fade it faster. You can also buy a product from Boots that strips out hair dye but I haven't tried it.

TBH I think your best bet is to go a salon and get them to correct the colour to a cooler shade. I know you're skint (so am I) but there are things that are just technically beyond the limit of what you can fix at home using colour from the drugstore . . . even if you were a trained colourist and knew what to use (green/ ash or blue corrector) you couldn't buy it there. And after all, you have to wear your hair EVERY day.

I have always used Herbashine as a permanent colour, didn't know it was supposed to wash out.

If I want rid of my red colours I just go for a dark brown dye and the it disappears. the sun makes the red go lighter and washed out. I knwo this because i did a red based dye, then went to france a couple of years ago for 4 weeks and came back with very light hair indeed. The hairdresser couldn't believe I was had dark brown hair peppered with grey.

Love the name, lawrie! But watch out - I've seen a LoisSanger around, too.

I may have taken control of a number of Antonia Forest names Grin. Lois being one of them. Although I don't have Rowan and that rather disappointed me.
