prom dress for short apple shape

Hi
I am helping my dd go prom dress shopping this weekend... (arrrhhh)
What shapes and styles would suit a just over 5 foot apple shape? She is a redhead (dark orangey colour) shoulder length, with beautiful peaches and cream complexion.
She normally wears 'boyish' clothes, but is not madly confident, and wants to look good compared with her slim and more trendy friends!
She would be around a size 8.
We dont have much budget, but i would love some pictures of shapes and styles to look for when we go out - thinking of tk maxx, and high street stores in general!

What age is she?

KristinaM · 19/04/2011 14:51

You say he normally wear boyish clothes? Do you mean sporty stuff like joggers and trainers? Does she wear skirts or dresses at all?

It's easy to find a prom dress for an apple as she will suit the classics prom shape, fitted top, flared skirt. And she will have good legs to show off. Is she ok with a scoop neck ?

But I need more of a clue on colours and patterns. Will she do lace or print? Does it have to be plain?

KristinaM · 19/04/2011 14:55

cream oasis dress is very sweet but quite high neck

oasis blue floral

sowhatshallido · 19/04/2011 15:58

she is 16 (and a half!)
She has been wearing leggings and denim shorts and t shirt in the hotter weather.
She would wear jeans and a t shirt and trainers normally
She is much shorter than her mates, and rather tubby round the tummy, no waist, okay legs, small boobs.Longish body in comparison.
She would be okay wearing heels.
She has trouble getting things to suit her figure generally so i think i need advice!
I like the blue floral one! Do you think the thing round the waist will emphasise the tummy area too much?
I think she may be thinking about a plain, strong colour - but with the white freckly red hair thing going on, maybe not pink, or red, or white or cream?

Love the first one! She is short so it is a worry that things that are meant ot be over or on the knee will be below - but i do like that top one.

I can't beleive you have described your daughter, who is a size 8, as "rather tubby round the tummy, no waist, okay legs, "

She is size 8 and 16 years old. She will look stunning whatever she wears.

colditz · 20/04/2011 12:28

Does she really have trouble getting things that suit her figure, or does she have trouble finding things that YOU think suit her figure?

She's 16, and a size eight. EVERYTHING will suit her figure and make her look beautiful. Colourwise, she should look into deep greens and avoid pink.

colditz · 20/04/2011 12:28

And nobody who is a size eight is 'tubby' in any way, unless they are 7 years old and 4 foot tall.

LaWeasel · 20/04/2011 12:34

Seriously, size 8 is tubby?!

I think you are mad.

sowhatshallido · 20/04/2011 12:52

this sounds bad - and it isnt!
i was trying to be objective in order to get realistic advice.
I am not putting her down.
She does have a 'gut' - objective!
she wants something to disguise and flatter.
she cannot just get something ?off the peg? and expect it to fit.
It will be too long, or too tight round the stomach area.
She is very self conscious and not really interested in fashion, clothes etc, but for this purpose ? a prom, where everyone will be dressed up, she wants to be as well.
Apparently people from school have been putting on a special facebook page what they will be wearing to prom, and someone has commented that dd should wear a mans suit and doc martins ? which obviously upset her ? because she isn?t stylish or trendy and a bit scruffy to be honest normally they have decided she is a lesbian and call her names all the time.
I would never dream of saying anything about her to her face or to anyone in RL about her like this.

I say a size 8 - that is overall, but in anything that would be fitted it owuld be a size 10 or even a bit more, in order not to be too tight round the middle - and often that looks daft on a little 5 footer because of proportions.

OP posts:
LaWeasel · 20/04/2011 12:58

Being impartial: I would get something that cuts under the boob and is looser from that point downward.

She sounds a bit more pearish, like me, and that suits quite well.

colditz · 20/04/2011 12:58

My friend is five foot, and a size 10/12 apple shape, and she is beautiful.

As for flattering her if she's self concious - this would be very beautiful.

colditz · 20/04/2011 13:00

or this

Aworryingtrend · 20/04/2011 13:08

Well I am a size 10-12 'little 5 footer' and I don't think I look 'daft'. Hmm

I hope you are not passing these comments on to your daughter who obviously needs her self-esteem boosting rather than being criticised. Anyway- what about something like this:
www.boohoo.com/evening-dresses/laila-rouched-sleeve-bodycon-dress/invt/azz73918

not too revealing and the darker colour on the bottom will hide a 'tummy'.

Or to go a totally different way, what about something like this which might appeal as its a bit 'darker' yet quirky and will be different to what everyone else is wearing?

sowhatshallido · 20/04/2011 14:01

i am going to show dd the links tonight and hopefully we can do some orders with free returns and take it from there!
I personally (although obv not for me!) like very much the style shown on colditz links, and somerset belles, not sure about the bodycon, or the one from karbea - but will ask dd if she likes any of them! - any other ideas welcome!

TKMAxx have some really, really nice dresses in atm- would green be good with her colouring?

They have got lots with ruching around the tummy, to pull in the appley bit, which might look good.

KristinaM · 20/04/2011 14:21

in defence of the op, i woudl point out that i am also a size 8 lollipop ( apple on a stick) and i too have a fat middle.

and i did ask the op for more information because an apple IS a diffiuclt shape to fit. if you get your shapes and proportions wrong you can look tubby. yes, even as an 8-10, i speak from experience

If you get it right you can look curvy and sexy . But that can be a hard look to pull off for a 16yo not very confident girl who lives in jeans and t shirts.especailly one who is being bullied by bitchy kids Sad

FWIW i really like the first dress colditz linked too

if she is not very confident i don't think she should go for soemthing very "different", she is prorbably concerned about fitting in with all her " friends"

sowhatshallido · 20/04/2011 14:23

green is lovely on her ChateauRouge

We have a TK Maxx so that will definitely be on the list!

I am rubbish with knowing what styles suit - i didnt realise ruching round the tummy would be a good thing!

OP posts:
ChateauRouge · 20/04/2011 14:26

Maybe a maxi dress would be good (take it up)- if she's not used to dressing up, they're very easy to wear.
