HOW much for a fascinators?!

Shock Shock
am going to a wedding and dress code for ladies is 'hats or preferably fascinators'. Now I don't do hats and I HATE fascinators but figured a fascinator would be cheaper than a hat - how wrong was I?! Admittedly only looked on monsoon website so far but we're talking £35!
Can I not put a flower in my hear {hopeful}?

can you hire one? I have no idea how much it would cost, but then at least you wouldn't have the thing hanging about in your house afterwards!

iskra · 17/04/2011 22:27

They are very easy to make! Or can be found pretty cheaply on Etsy.

tethersegg · 17/04/2011 22:28

What colour are you after?

I reckon hats are better, but if you post your outfit and I'll try and find something cheaper Wink

woopsidaisy · 17/04/2011 22:39

I would take that to mean that she wants people to have stuff on their head. Doesn't have to be a hat or fascinator (shudder).
What about an alice band or as you say flowers with funky up do?
I know this is way over budget, but just to give you an idea...

Or even some nice clips?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/04/2011 07:10

I bought one from M&S for about £15 - like you a begrudging purchase for a dress coded wedding!

Do any of your friends have one you can borrow?

migola · 18/04/2011 08:06

thanks for your replies everyone, sorry I went to bed!
Don't know what colour yet because I need to get a dress first. Will have a look on Etsy and M&S & will investigate fancy alice bands which would be less like a nest on my head Grin
I'll also ask around for ones I can borrow once I know what the hell I'm wearing on the rest of my body

Oh a flower or flowers could be really nice. Some fascinators look a bit "dead bird". How about buying a headband and attaching some fresh flowers to it (a florist should be able to help)

Househunter · 18/04/2011 08:37

My mum just bought one from M&S for £10 - it was really pretty too! Smile

PipCarrier · 18/04/2011 12:50

I had one made for me by an ebay seller for £12, she makes it to your exact colours and will even send you sample feathers. PM me if you want her email address.

BikeRunSki · 18/04/2011 12:53

They are like glasses and bikinis - the less there is of them, the more they cost.

cybboid · 18/04/2011 12:55

Fascinators are a bit Big Fat Ladies Day at Aintree

HATE bossy wedding invitations too

Cant you just wear a big flower in your hair? I bloody would

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/04/2011 12:58

Look on ebay and etsy. I would do an updo and get a cheap flower hairclip and stick it in. Primark had some big flowers recently, for one wear that would be fine! I bought a very pretty embellished alice band type thing from there for a wedding recently for a quid.

Anyway sod dress codes - wear what you want on your head - what are they going to do - chuck you out?

Spangers · 18/04/2011 12:59

Debenhams do them pretty cheap as well, and ebay as loads of colour choices.

My auntie is setting up a business to hire out hats/fascinators so I imagine there are plenty of similar websites.

I wanted something a bit different for weddings last summer so went for a vintage style hair accesory instead:

stressheaderic · 18/04/2011 12:59

Do you have a local market? There's often a stall selling hair tat bobbles, earrings etc and they usually do actually quite nice fascinators. I got a lovely purple flower clip from one for £1 and TJ Hughes do fascinators for about £5.
Always loads on eBay too. Seriously, do not pay Accessorize's prices!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/04/2011 13:03

How incredibly rude of the people having the wedding! Shock

cybboid · 18/04/2011 13:04

I get so fed up with these 'zillas' eg bride zillas

I have a hostesszilla friend who dictates what we should bring everytime we visit her house. Its usually champagne Hmm

migola · 18/04/2011 13:09
Grin I know, I was a bit Hmm at specific dress code - it's my hair, I should be allowed to put or not put what I choose in it! I understand if dress code is e.g. casual, or no ties etc, but to actually tell you you have to put something on your head?!

and WTF is a lounge suit anyway

think I will do flower or alice band depending on the dress, or a woolly hat Grin

OP posts:
sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/04/2011 13:13

a lounge suit is just a normal suit, as opposed to a dinner jacket or (snigger) white tie and tails.

woolly hat an excellent idea. I dare you.

migola · 18/04/2011 13:13

some nice things on there spangers but a bit £££

No one should wear a fascinator ever ever ever! Pat butcher and peggy mitchell tastic

dexter73 · 18/04/2011 14:36

I wouldn't wear either. Hats don't suit me and I would feel like a moron in a fascinator! She can't make you wear anything.

There are some great ones on ebay (as well as some cheap tat) - I bought one from someone with an ebay shop & it arrived in a lovely box, was about £15 - £20 but looked more like the ones that are £50 in John Lewis / Monsoon / Coast.

Can't remember the name, but sounds like the one Pip Carrier used - she would match colours & do samples.

A flower would probably be fine if it's / you are dressy enough though!

JiminyCricket · 18/04/2011 16:55

£4.99 from Just Beauty..and our local St Peters Hospice charity shop has started hiring hats and fascinators (nice ones) for £5.
