Breton tops - fabulous or mumsy "cruisewear"

Emo76 · 17/04/2011 20:38

I am in the fab camp, this is my maiden season as a convert, thanks to some prodding from the Wise and Avid ladies on this board.

HOWEVER (said in ridiculous tension building Simon Cowell like voice) DH thinks they are a bit "mumsy" and akin to cruisewear!

Just wondered what you lot thought (and what your partners think too!)

I am still wearing mine BTW!

Your DH is being very unreasonable!

Bretons are lovely. They can be mumsy if worn the wrong way. Cannot define that. Just know when I see it

Quick survey of my long sleeve tees reveals 5 of them residing chez Tulpe.

dexter73 · 17/04/2011 20:43

I love them. I have never been on a cruise!

ExpectoPatronum · 17/04/2011 20:46

I am a new convert to the ways of the breton top (and no, they don't look like cruisewear. Emo, is your DH confusing them with pastel velour and those bat wing t-shirts encrusted with rhinestones?)

Please show me the best ones Smile.

tulpe · 17/04/2011 20:51

These from H&M are great. I don't like them tight on my arms though so I size up (am usually a size 8/small and I buy the medium or large"). Look fab with skinny trousers or jeans. I loved the one I bought last year that I wore it out and thankfully the re-introduced them again this year :)

Zara also do a great breton. These are really soft and wash beautifully. Very flattering but would recommend you buy your regular size and wear them slim fit.

KristinaM · 18/04/2011 00:53

My dh woud never dream of having any opinions on my clothes

Except to tell me how great I look

I recommend this as one of the secrets of a happy marriage

Emo76 · 18/04/2011 07:32

Wow Kristina I'm glad you have such a perfect marriage!

I value my DH's opinions as he has pretty good taste - but feel free to share more of your secrets with us, does he like Breton tops by the way?

OP posts:
KristinaM · 18/04/2011 08:02

I don't remember saying it was perfect. Just happy.

Chill emo

Al0uiseG · 18/04/2011 08:08

They're like everything, it depends how you "style" them. If you wear them with navy slacks and pop socks and vile shoes they will look grandma'y never mind mumsy.

On the other hand 3/4 length skinnys and ballet flats look fab Grin

Emo76 · 18/04/2011 08:25

Kristina I am just not sure why you felt the need to make the point at all on this thread - my marriage is happy too - it's normal not to agree on everything. Chill yourself!

OP posts:
Whatevs · 18/04/2011 08:28

They were 'edgy fashionista' a couple of years ago. No more.

KristinaM · 18/04/2011 08:49

Ahem, you asked what our partners thought. I was just responding to your op.

I didn't say my marriage was perfect. I didn't say we agree on everything. It's just my dh has learned when to keep his big gob shut and save our disagreements for things that actually matter. Which for us doesn't include styles of clothing

I'm glad your dh has such good taste in clothing, I'm very happy for you. Mine is very good in bed. We all have our areas of expertise Wink

Why are you being so snipey? It's just a s and b thread for goodness sake

Meggles76 · 18/04/2011 09:08

Anyway, back to the discussion about stripy Ts Wink
I have worn them for many a year now and have several in my wardrobe right now:
Boden's yellow stripe with navy trims - getting lots of wear with skinny jeans and gold ballet flats.
H&M's navy stripe with little buttons on the sleeve and at the neck. It is quite fitted so I am wearing it with my new skinny flare jeans and wedges.
Jigsaw navy stripe - for some reason I tend to use this one as a layering piece - under dresses and tunics etc...
Kew - red stripe with 3/4 sleeves - wasn't sure when I bought this but really like it now.

I am tempted by a further Boden one in navy stripes.

DH is quite used to me in my stripes - although he really isn't a fashion man Wink

carciofi · 18/04/2011 09:31

Hi Emo. DH only remarked on my breton once, when DD was wearing a matching one. I take it that means he likes them/has no opinion as he tells me when he doesn't like something I wear. I don't think they are mumsy, I have a couple of stripey tops and have worn them for years. I mostly wear them with skinny jeans (when not pregnant!). I'll need some new ones in the summer, bookmarking Tulpe's Zara bretons.

Optimism · 18/04/2011 09:34

Kristina, I'm going to bring your original comment to the attention of my DH. It is something he is yet to learn!

thomasbodley · 18/04/2011 09:41

Breton tops are a bit dressing-by-numbers. Women who have lost their way style-wise tend to flock to reliable 'classics', but unless you are twentysomething and French they can, conversely, look a bit ageing.

Personally I think they've been done to death. There are nicer and more interesting tops out there.

said · 18/04/2011 09:48

I don't understand why they are suddenly fashionable or why anyone cares. If you like stripey tops wear them. I've always worn stripey tops but now we have to call them Breton tops

BikeRunSki · 18/04/2011 09:53

I like them and wear them, and other stripey Ts a lot. PG at the moment and my Boden cotton lycra PArrisienne and Hampton tops strech over bump, washi and wear well.

Might be a bit mumsy with wide leg linen trousers and a PerUna crotchet cardy thoug.

muminthemiddle · 18/04/2011 09:59

I like them.

mumonahottinroof · 18/04/2011 10:53

I like them but am currently avoiding them because they are ubiquitous

MoonGirl1981 · 18/04/2011 10:59

Mumsey cruisey, sorry.

Also terribly boring.

Also EVERYBODY is wearing them, is better to look a bit more original.

xxx

Meggles76 · 18/04/2011 11:01

Well said Said!!

FolornHope · 18/04/2011 11:01

as someone who puts kisses at the end of her post - then derides other people for being naff..

MoonGirl1981 · 18/04/2011 11:10

I didn't call anyone naff!

The OP asked for our opinions - does mine not count then?

And the kisses weren't for you. They were for everyone else.

So 'ner'.

tulpe · 18/04/2011 12:26

who knew a thread about striped tees could be so controversial :o

Al0uiseG · 18/04/2011 12:33

Bitchery among the Breton, what fun!
