Please recommend facial products for dry skin - rosacea - poor complexion

I have dry sensitive skin with a ruddy complexion. I have some broken veins across my cheeks and was told by a beauty therapist that I have rosacea. I'm prone to spots if I use really heavy moisturiser or make up.

I have tried so many products - I'm currently using the range of Simple Spotless Skin here which has helped calm my skin but really dries it out.

I use Dior Nude Foundation to even out the redness in my skin which, in turn, causes spots.

It's so frustrating. I'd love to hear your recommendations as it's really affecting my confidence. Many thanks

Just discovered Clinique anti redness solutions.
Always had a rosey complexion ( take after mum) but have to admit this is the best thing I have used in years.

I was told by a clinique salesperson to always use oil free products, and always use a sunscreen. I use clinique supdefense, plus have just started using the redness solutions foundation to even out the red patches on my cheeks. It's utterly brilliant. The best thing for my rosacea, though, is oral antibiotics - ask your GP.

That should be superdefence, obviously!

You need to cleanse with Cetaphil. It made a huge difference to my (dry, spotty, blotchy) skin. I got a lot fewer spots, the dryness was significantly less and it was less red. Moisturiser is a bit more difficult. I am still looking for the holy grail, but at the moment I am using La Roche Posay Lipikar Bauma AP. This is meant to be a body moisturiser, which calms itchy skin, and it works a treat on my face too. It absorbs really quickly, and you don't need much. As it's summer now (haha) I have ditched my Bobbi Brown foundation and use Nuxe or La Roche Posay tinted moisturiser, which evens out my skin tone enough.

I could probably do with an anti wrinkle cream at my advanced age, but all of the ones I've tried have made my face feel tight, dry and itchy.

I use Dalacin T, which is an antibiotic lotion for the odd spot - this usually zaps them in a couple of days, and shrinks them significantly after the first application.

Hello,

You need a glycolic acid cleanser and vitamin c serum to use once a day, and then a really good spf50.

If you have to use a moisturiser ( which you shouldn't) make sure it's a hydrator rather than moisturiser.

pinkhousesarebest · 17/04/2011 13:14

La Roche Posay here too. I uses Nutricic for very dry skin. I have also tried Bioderma products recently for dry, easily irritated skin, but by the end of the day my skin is so tight I could scream.
La Poche Posay vitamin C cream was recommended to me by my dermatologist, but it was too harsh.

I too am still searching for the one

Thank you for the recommendations - I will look into some of the products mentioned.

Have you visited a dermatologist or at least your GP? They are the experts and can give you a proper diagnosis of rosacea.

If it is rosacea, there are lifestyle changes that can help eg.avoid the sun, alcohol and extremes of temperature etc. The NHS has a website on rosacea that may be helpful.

SaveWaterDrinkWine · 17/04/2011 16:00

No I haven't actually - think a visit to my GP is in order. I woke up today with lots more spots and redness. I can't say I have noticed anything which may trigger it. Some of the spots are really painful.

I always had clear skin until I had my DC!

Have you thought about mineral makeup for coverage? Lilylolo is very good. And won't aggravate your skin.

wideawakenurse · 17/04/2011 19:45

Hi,

To be honest, I find that no products make my rosacea any better. I think it's about choosing products that don't induce any flare ups. I am using Liz Earle cleanse and polish and clinique redness solutions moisturiser.

I must say though, please, please do not use any thing with glycolic acid in it. It is the worst thing for Rosacea.

HouseOfBamboo · 17/04/2011 19:47

Your recent flare-ups could possibly be linked to the recent bouts of good weather as UV can make rosacea worse.

I find the OCM (oil cleansing method) helps, and means I don't need a night time moisturiser.

I started using Rosaliac as a day moisturiser during the winter, which seemed good (though no dramatic transformation sadly). I stopped using it recently in favour of a more UV blocking one, and my skin has erupted with spots and gone very flaky, oh joy. I don't know whether it's down to the change in moisturiser, or the sun, or both, or what Hmm

Incidentally just noticed that actually Rosaliac is supposed to be UV blocking anyway, so will prob go back to that to see if it makes a difference.

I've been looking through these "red face" threads as I to suffer from the same problems.

Skin was fine till I had DS 8 years ago and I got really spotty, then about 3 years ago I noticed that as soon as the sun came out, I turned red. And I've got a fair few thread veins, due to advancing years.

I'm getting proper fed up now, but had some boots vouchers to spend so bought the clinique anti-redness protective base yesterday and bloody hell, what a difference!

I didn't think it made much difference when you put it on, but once you get your make-up on top it really does. (I use mineral powder anyway, I'm rubbish with liquid foundation)

Obviously it's a cover up, rather than a cure, but it's a start...right!

My sister has rosacea. Its not the same as standard dry, red or even spotty skin, its a skin condition in itself so you should really go to your doc to get it confirmed that you do actually have it (thats if you're not sure obviously). Plus they will recommend specialist skincare (or refer you to a dermatologist who will do so).

Rosacea will flare under emotional or physical stress, and some foods make it worse - red wine especially, alcohol in general, spicy foods. Go for skincare products that are gentle rather than abrasive, whether acid based abrasives or exfoliating abrasives. Glycolic peels etc are great for spots, uneven pigmentation or dry surface layers, but you should stay well away if you've rosacea unless you want to aggravate it badly. My sister swears by Weleda, its gentle and natural and calms her skin. There is no cure as such for real rosacea but it can be managed. Weleda's rose skincare line is lovely.
