If you are apple shaped what do you wear that flatters your spare tyre?

Am trying to lose the stone I put on with my two pregnancies.

I've always been very apple shaped - not much in the way of hips, slim legs, wide shoulders and fat belly Sad

I'm desperate to find something that doesn't show my muffin top. Has anyone got a solution to this? I find if I wear dreses that skim I look pregnant as look as though I'm fat all the way from my boobs down.

I like wearing jeans and vests but vest material seems to be so thin and clingy these days. Either that or the vests are too tight or not long enough.

Please help me, what should I be wearing? And can anyone sugges the best jean cut to disguise a spare tyre?

Thanks!

SomersetBelle Love that Phas Eight dress might buy it and tell DH that DS clothes shop this year was shocking {smile]

I've got two drop-waisted dresses (1920's flapper style almost), that are great and distract from the lack of waist. I also have a load of empire line dresses (NO gathers or pleats under the bust - thus avoiding the pregnancy look). I always wear skirts on the hip, as can't stand any tightness on the waist - even if it means going a size larger, or for a stretchy fabric.

Straight cut tunics and leggings - if you're an apple you've probably got good legs, so get them out! I also never wear t-shirts - they make me look square due to my swimmer's shoulders - or tops in clinging fabric. I got for little tops in cotton, silk, small pintucks falling from the bust.

I don't wear classic jeans, ever. A flat bum and skinny hips means that they just fall down. The only trousers and jeans I own have wide waistbands (3/4 buttons), which is comfortable and helps them stay put.

Starbear if you do get it I recommend sizing down - I tried on the 10 and that was quite loose. I'm definitely at least a 12.

I'm a lollipop ( apple on a stick) and I bought this dress yesterday from Wallis, which is a perfect fit. The colours are not the same in rl as on my monitor , it's poppy red, teal and olive green

It's fully lined and good quality for the price ( unusual for wallis). And if you buy gift vouchers you can get 5 or 10 pounds off

Primark has some long vests. I wear 2 at a time because as you say they are a bit thin and flimsy, so I wear a tank top over a vest top. You can then be quite creative with colour combos.

Thanks everyone, some great ideas. KristinaM - I love the cut of that Wallis dress. Not sure I'd be brave enough to wear something so colourful though Sad tend to stick to black atm which I always do when I feel overweight. Am a 14 which I know is not massive, but I have a round face and feel v overweight.

I actually would say no to cropped / bolero jackets as they add too much weight on the upper body with nothing to balance below, IME. However, a well-fitting blazer, one that's hip-length with a slightly nipped waist, hides a multitude of sins.

I layer tops as well, fitted vest top with a floaty shrug or trendy cardi over the top.

I love skirts, I go for A line as it kinda balances me on the bottom half, I find the trick is to go for whatever size fits your waist so you don't get the massive muffin top and the extra round your bum gives the illusion of hips.

I hate jeans, I have to pull them so tight round the waist to stop them sliding down my non existent hips they never seem to look right. Funnily enough, I found New Look the best fit for jeans, they sit on the hips and I just wear a floatyish top with them.

I like topshop fit for plain black trousers as well.

Ashbury any favourite shops or brands for trousers?

I love that dress KristinaM!

Ashbury · 17/04/2011 09:04

Somerset, unfortunately my three pairs of jeans/ trousers are quite old now - between 6 and 2 years - and came from New Look and M & S Autograph. I find it increasingly difficult to find jeans/ trousers that fit my criteria - wide waistband, generally wide legged too. Wallis have done this kind of style for a few years now, but I found them an odd fit and they just didn't work on me at all (I tend to live in dresses and leggings these days!).

SomersetBelle · 18/04/2011 06:45

Thanks Ashbury. I really struggle with trousers too. I also had a lovely pair from M & S, and from a shop called Mistral (don't know how widespread this is), but agree they are hard to find.

Thought you may have stumbled across an amazing apple friendly shop and I was missing out! Thanks for getting back to me.
