my hair has turned to straw

Not dyed, I barely use a hairdrier prefering to leave it to dry naturally as it's wavy/curly. It used to be very curly, but I seem to have lost the curl over the last few years. It's also very fine.
I used to be able to get up in the morning and run my fingers through it and it was lovely and shiny and would settle into a 'tousled' kind of look.

Now it sticks up all over and I look like sodding Beethoven Grin

I've been using the Aussie shampoo and conditioner as last time I used that it worked wonders on my hair but it's making no difference now.

So any recommendations for shampoo/conditioner or other stuff which may help get my hair back to looking luscious?

Moroccan oil shampoo, conditioner and hair masque (and the normal stuff to pop on when your hair's wet). Get thee to ebay...

I have curly hair and the last time I was on holiday it got in awful condition from being in the swimming pool non-stop. The holiday shop didn't have much choice but I got some Tresemme Salon Silk conditioner for extra dry, frizz prone hair. It was really good and I still use it. I'd seen all the adverts which looked too good to be true but I would def recommend it. I also really like the Avon frizz control range, the shampoo is really good, you only need a tiny bit, and there is a kind of leave in conditioner/serum which is great.

Aveda damage remedy. Morrocan oil is mainly silicone. You can buy the active ingredient argan oil on amazon. I didn't get on with morrocan oil as it made my fine hair heavy and greasy sooner than before.

Joh Frieda Frizz Ease is helping to sort mine out after a few days in a very windy seaside town!

IAmTheCookieMonster · 15/04/2011 10:48

I used to use vo5 hot oil

muminthemiddle · 15/04/2011 10:51

Do you get a regular cut? Think this would help bring back the bounce.

heymammy · 15/04/2011 10:55

Find a shampoo with NO silicones (dimethicone is the most common) as these build up in your hair and are crap for curlies or, every week, do a clarifying wash to get rid of any build up by adding a teaspoon of bicarb to your shampoo then use lots of lovely (silicone free) conditioner Smile

My hair is really only wavy but by getting rid of silicones and conditioning well I can encourage it to be curly

missmartha · 15/04/2011 11:08

Can someone point me in the direction of a good silicone free shampoo.

I've got fine straight hair. I wash it every day and it looks sleek(ish) and shiny(ish).

But I wake every morning looking like a gonk and it's driving me nuts.

muminthemiddle it was past my shoulders and it got so bad that I had it cut very short to get rid of all the split ends and broken bits. I grew it out a bit and looked very scruffy for ages Grin because I got married in Feb and wanted enough length for a bob. I had it cut the last week in Feb just before my wedding, it was great for a couple of weeks but has got really bad again.

When it gets to my shoulders it tends to go ringlety at the ends, i just run my fingers through my hair and it looks great.

Stylewise is actually looks best if i leave it absolutely dripping wet to dry as the curls don't 'separate' then, and i can get away with just a water rinse every morning, but at the moment if i do this is just goes frizzy, and like straw.
I've just realised the Aussie shampoo is leaving a build up on my scalp.

I've never been one for using products on my hair as everything i've ever tried has just flattened it and made it greasy really quickly.

Will look for products without silicone in and see if a clarifying wash, new products and a deep conditioner can help.

I'd give anything to have back the curls i had in my teens...

Aussie is awful for build-up ime. Look at the curly girl threads - the key is to avoid sls in the shampoo and silicones in everything - they have really good suggestions for shampoos and conditioners (I really like Neal's Yard and Naked), and advice on the 'no-poo' method where you don't use shampoo at all.

katiejj · 15/04/2011 13:16

I've been using the aussie volume and light conditioner, this morning I had huuuuge bird nest hair, you couldn't get a brush anywhere near it.

As much as I love the smell, the aussie stuff just doesnt work for my fine wavy hair.

queenrollo · 19/04/2011 08:36

I've been pondering this a bit, and doing some research as I realised my hair has got bad since we moved two years ago........and I think part of the problem is that I now live in a hard water area.

So i'm going to cut out all the nasty stuff in my hair care products (which i intended to do from a green stance anyway) and am also going to try a cider vinegar rinse as suggested on several laces where hard water/bad hair has been discussed. Will coem back and let you know if it makes any difference!

try philip Kingsley products, his elesticizer is a miracle in a jar, it really really is. I cant live without it. Its expensive but you only need to use a little at a time. The shampoos and conditioners for hair type are totally brilliant. I use the moisture balance and also the body building shampoo. Smile

MrsRyanReynolds · 19/04/2011 09:45

Also think about working from the inside out.

My hair has always been at its best when I have been drinking lots of water and eating a very healthy diet with lots of oily fish like mackerel.

A good nights sleep and minimal stress will work wonders too.

You could also try some of those skin, hair and nails vitamin supplements.

All of the above will honestly make more of an impact than any shampoo or conditioner under the sun.

However I do recommend nearly every Kerastase product on the market! Grin

queenrollo · 19/04/2011 12:42

mrsryan one of the reasons i think it's the water rather than nutrition is because for the last three years my diet has been the healthiest it's ever been, and i take a multi-vit. I could probably up my fluid intake during the day though, that's something i've always been a bit naughty about.

My hairdresser has given me some Matrix Biolage Delicate Care Oil - to try out, it seems to be olive oil and argan oil mostly, no silicones, and I have to say it is working out well for me, making my frizz-prone hair much more manageable. I have actually not got my GhDs out for the first time in living memory today...and soon I may even be brave enough to let it dry naturally...!!!
