dying of hair - can it be done?

as in from a 'dirty' blonde sort, to a shocking flame red, or would something more subtable (ie highlights) be better? also home colours or salon colours?

I think dark blonde to flame red would be fine (I've done it before with home kits!). The only thing I would say is that bright reds are a nightmare to keep up as they look fantastic at first but fade pretty quickly to a kind of dirty orange and have to be refreshed. It's due to my laziness in this area that I now stick to brunette, but I loved my hair when it was red. Go for it! :-)

ooh not so keen on a dirty orange - perhaps a darker red might be better then?

Red is a pain, it DOES fade ridiculously quickly. It appears to be any red tone in my hair that fades out, but you might be lucky! I've just gone from mid brown to plum and if I do say so myself, it does rock :) Hope it doesn't fade too fast!

If I were you and if you have the time for touch ups or another change to something more predictable when baby arrives, I'd dye it the fabulous red and see what happens, but I'm a little renegade with my hair colour!

As for dyeing in pregnancy, I actually can't remember so I won't comment but I hope someone with some firing braincells will appear shortly!

I kept dyeing my hair while pg, after satisfying myself it isn't a big problem.

I've tried both salon and home colour and tbh, although it's easier to sit an have someone do it for you, the results vary with both. I've had home colours and salon colours I've loved, and I've had home colours and salon colours I've been disappointed with (or horrified by :o). So I home dye now because it's cheaper and less awkward if I hate it!

I think your plan will work but start with a more subtle red to see how it takes. I can recommend one called "watermelon" - but I'm afraid I can't remember the make! but have a look on the shelves.

watermelon - that's not going to go green is it? lol.

ok DS is away next week, I shall grab my aunty & she can do it for me at home. as long as it's not going to go orange/green/fall out.

did you use perm ant ones?

perhaps a rusty copper one might be best? will the blonde come back through though as I quite like my blonde hair.
