so is it all right if I reply by saying "why, are all the fat people too busy eating?"

And as a size 8, do I have no clue what women of any other size should wear?

Geez. When will people get it into their heads that being called "skinny" is as bad as being called "fat"? And that being slim doesn't mean you don't eat??

salvadory · 11/04/2011 17:39

Tulpe have a Biscuit she was joking and we're not in aibu now.
OP have you tried Evans?? (I'm a size 8 too so not too up on plus sizes)
Ps 44 isn't old but maybe something like jaques vert for a classic dress and jacket combo, my aunt in her early 50's has had a few nice outfits from here.

tulpe · 11/04/2011 18:19

salvadory I understood that. But last week another S&B poster got a right flaming for suggesting that women of a certain size shouldn't wear a particular dress. She was totally pulled to pieces by other MNers asking how dare she make comments about larger people Confused Hmm

Just annoyed at the double standards.

tethersegg · 11/04/2011 18:53

Right, need details.

Do you want a dress? length? sleeves? jacket?

Can you do heels?

Budget?

tethersegg · 11/04/2011 19:05

This would be nice with black opaques and heels...

Or this with black opaques, heels and orange clutch...

Or this- www.houseoffraser.co.uk/CC+Natural+linen+dress/150587192,default,pd.html?cgid=301?cm_mmc=AWIN--Deeplink--NULL-_-NULL

You'll have to CnP that one as I can't link to HoF anymore Angry

Or this

How do you feel about those ones? Tell me if you hate them and I'll look again Smile

motherofluvlies · 11/04/2011 20:36

Thank you so much Tethersegg.
I can never find dresses that I am comfortable in and you have found at least 2.The CC one is beautiful but out of my price range for this event. The Very dress is way out of my comfort zone but it looks gorgeous...i might be brave....I have no waist(8 kids0 actually no lets be honest...choccy and good living.)I am slimmer on bottom half.

tulpe...maybe that stereotype is true and fat people do hide behind a sense of humourWink

tehersegg what do you think of these.I quite like the idea of stripey trousers

I would go for well cut (loose Grin) trousers and a floaty top (long line) - keep to dark colours; I am your sort of size and just seen a picture of myself in cream cut offs and a pale top and didn't look too good Grin

Garlicrisotto · 12/04/2011 03:51

Agree with Tulpe. It seems to be acceptable to talk about people being "skinny" to their faces. I would never have been so rude (until now) as to call someone fat but the (fat) OP has goaded me in to it.

goingmadinthecountry · 12/04/2011 06:56

Being sensitive about my weight I never comment, as I know it's rude, but it's probably because we're jealous of slim people and would love to be skinny and go into any shop and buy anything so don't feel it can possibly be offensive to anyone. I can only dream of people telling me I'm skinny so to me it would be a compliment.

OP, the dresses that flatter me the most are a bit drapey, v necked a bit like this but maybe no stripes! I have it in black and a pattern - there's an outlet shop near me. Worn with a wrap. Starting to wear dresses has been a revelation - always looks better on me than the floaty cover up stuff. www.phase-eight.co.uk/fcp/product/warehouse/All-Sale/Stripe-Renee-Dress/201288287

MillsAndDoom · 12/04/2011 09:37

If you're up against time then Next is a good bet to get stuff delivered - would you wear a dress I ordered this thinking it was cotton but its quite a silky material and therefore more dressy than it looks - cardi wedges a clutch and you're away.

wendihouse22 · 12/04/2011 09:56

With respect to the more slender ladies....it is NOT the same, at all.

Don't want to open a hornet's nest here but, in our society (generally) fat folks are seen (often) as stupid, lacking in will power, unattractive, slovenly, etc etc. Skinny ladies are revered (look at celebrities/models) as though their slender frame is something they have "achieved" as you might gain a qualification. Clothes (usually) hang better on them and my own step daughters "imagine" that they are too weighty (they are both tiny little things, with barely a pick on them) I think, because their own mum is super slim. Not because she doesn't eat but because it is her genetic makeup and her good luck. Of course, two hundred years ago, I (size 12/14 top and size 14/16 bottom) would have been considered quite the preferred shape, it being a sign that I could afford to eat.

So no, in my opinion, skinny sisters..... it is NOT the same. People you don't even know won't stare at you and snigger and pass comment about your size in whatever you happen to have decided to wear that day.

Oh and love the Next "trousers and top with cardi layered over" look. Try something like that, OP. And ENJOY yourself....!

Have a hunt on ASOS as if I remember correctly they have some stylish things in your size range.

Also H&M?

KaraToytown · 12/04/2011 10:06

Wallis is your friend.

Carrotsandcelery · 12/04/2011 10:11

this covers a multitude of sins and would create a waist

This thread has lots of beautiful ideas too here

Get thee down to Phase Eight They go up to a size 18, but take it from someonw who veers between an 18 and a 22, their clothes are very forgiving.

Failing that Betty Jackson Black goes up to a size 20 and is my go to brand for good quality clothes. This is what I'm wearing at the moment.

polyhymnia · 12/04/2011 10:50

Slug didn't know Phase Eight were so forgiving! Anything there now you think might be so forgiving a 22 could get into it? Or any styles to look out for there in general ?

slug · 12/04/2011 15:31

The draped jersey dresses are always a winner as they stretch have some 'give'. I have the shorter version of this which works well with the large norks, big belly as the drapes hide the belly while emphsising your fabulous frontage. This also looks like it would work. This one ticks two of the perfect dress qualifications, being forgiving and having sleeves, (the other criteria for the perfect dress is having pockets) though I'm not convinced about the print, you would have to see it on first.

Another option, if you have a bit more cash, it to try Ghost. Their crepe dresses will stretch. The size L is equivalent to an 18 and again, I've got one that I wear during my size 22 days. (though to be fair, I got it in the sale)
