Hi, I have become really bad about dressing smart these days. Am late 50`s and 6ft tall and size 16+!! We are going to Chelsea Flower Show on the 24th May, then staying over and going to see Les Miserable the following afternoon. Need one outfit for both, and will probably have to travel in it too. Any ideas please?

Why do you need one outfit? Surely you will have an overnight bag? For chelsea you need comfortable shoes. You don't need to be smart for unless you want to

Good advice, I think. Don't have direct experience of dressing for Chelsea but know and have seen plenty of people who have gone and have impression it's quite 'dressed up'. Don't think that would be a good look for the London theatre as people really don't 'dress up' for that (except a few tourists perhaps) - often have come straight from work, or are just in jeans. A nice tunic or simple dress would be quite as smart as you'd need to go.

polyhymnia · 10/04/2011 22:53

PS Also don't forget London theatres are often hot and seats - even the best - not very comfortable, particularly for the taller and larger among us, so I'd dress accordingly.

I have been to Chelsea a couple of times. Tis a real mix of jeans & fleeces, casual summery clothing and "dressed up" :) So my advice is to wear something you feel good in. And please do wear comfy shoes: I have worn either Birkies or flip-flops both times and they have been a godsend as you walk a lot.

And don't forget a rain hat and some kind of waterproof jacket incase it rains. Tis severely frowned upon to be making busy with a brolly if the rain comes down: it gets very crowded around the show gardens and the last thing you want is brolly wars.

Thanks everyone........just have to travel light, we will go up on the train, straight to Chelsea, so have to carry everything with us. DH has cancer, so I will prob carry some of his stuff. Am struggling already to find someone to have the kids o/night.

there is a left luggage area at chelsea, its called the plant creche or something similar. you can leave your overnight bag there and go back and get things out as often as you like

its a long tiring day, with lots of walking. i woudl get there at opening time, before its too busy. that way you can see the things you really want to first, in case your Dh gets too tired.

Thank you Kristina that is really helpful, we are really looking forward to it, we are going on members day, don`t know if that means it will be busier? Are there lots of places to sit, eat etc?

OP posts:
tulpe · 11/04/2011 17:39

Members day should be slightly quieter than the other days - they are the more exclusive viewing days Wink

There are loads of places to sit (if nothing else, you can pretend you are interested in the garden furniture stands and have a little rest :o ). And there are loads of restaurants: Champagne & Oyster bars, Pimms bars, fine dining, burger bar (but seriously good quality burgers......this is Chelsea, after all), sandwich places, pizza, afternoon tea, all kinds to suit all budgets.

Sounds good to me:)

Hope you have a great time, Triplets. It is a great day out. When we have been, DH stands back and rolls his eyes every time I get the camera out as he knows it signals a "must have" moment either with plants or design ideas

Do you have any more of an idea about what you will wear now? Have we been helpful in that regard? It really is a very relaxed affair which means you can dress up or down and no one will mind in the slightest. Ditto the theatre.

KristinaM · 11/04/2011 19:08

LOL at tulpe " exclusive viewing day". i think that's Monday Grin

i agree with tuplle, wear whatever you want. there are all sorts there - germans and danes in fleeces and walking trousres/ boots, girls on corporate hospitality in high heels and minis, London yummy mummies in maxis, denim jackets and fierce glads and Continental ladies in smart navy 3/4 trousres, loafers, good sunglasses and blazers.

and lots of middle aged middle class RHS members - ladies in dresses and jackets or even pashminas and gents in sports jackets and flannels. or perhaps a jaunty blazer with gold buttons Smile

If you would enjoy the chance to dress up then do so. just remember confortable shoes. and sun hat / cream /glasses if the forecast is good.if your usual style is jeans/ t shirt/fleece you will also be fine

have a WONDERFUL day Smile

No, still no idea what to wear, I used to be so good with clothes, just not bothered the last three years since my dh was diagnosed. Never enough cash to spend on myself, can`t keep up with my trio atm, growing at an alarming rate!

You BOTH deserve a break! Living with cancer is hard on everyone
