my cousin just had these done.shes saying how they make your nails stronger and they dont break as your nails grow and that nail varnish lasts lots longer.
can anyone tell me more?

I have had them. They're pretty much like acrylic nails. Not sure why she thinks they make your nails stronger??

Are you talking about Gelac nails? If so, I wouldn't recommend. I was really impressed by the way they looked but when they were soaked off my nails were totally ruined - dried out, broken and generally knackered. It has taken over 2 months to get them back to normal.

cheesesarnie · 09/04/2011 18:47

thanks!so it'll be a no then!i'll avoid them.
her friend is a nail person and did them,so guessing thats where she got the bad information.

my nails are weak anyway!

I get them done probably twice a year and my nails are always completely ruined afterwards .....nice at the time though...

I've had these. I don't know if they're similar to gelac.

They do stop your nails from breaking and splitting - at least they did for me and I grew them much longer than normal. The colour lasts for the whole time it's on there - doesn't chip or fade.

They last about 3 weeks - then the growth becomes obvious at the bottom of your nails. You can get them filled in - the same colour or darker. They recomend that you only infill once or the build up makes your nails too thick.

I had mine soaked off last week - only because I can't justify the cost every 3 weeks. If I could I'd have them all the time. Since being soaked off my nails do feel a bit dry - but haven't been breaking or splitting. I've been putting a coat of clear varnish on and they feel normal.

They are very bad for your nails - I would not recommend.

gel is better than acrylic is you need false type.
Gel's allow your nails to continue to breath and gro as they are a flexible layer.

Acrylics, your own nails need to be filed prior to fixing and filed to remove.

Gels just need a slight buff prior to fixing and when removing.

I have gels done by my nail technician at nails inc. I don't have any problems with them and have then reapplied every few months. I prefer to have them constantly but lack of time makes it impossible.

re colour lasts longer, think maybe she is referring to the fact maybe she has coloured gel.? I have this and its known as the 3 week manicure as they are meant to stay chip free for 3 weeks. I must admit, I get around 2 weeks but being a sahm and given what I put my hands through I expect that!

Gel nails are like a permanent manicure. They need to be done every 3 weeks by a professional nail technician. As new layers are applied the nails do appear stronger. They are soaked off every 3 months and then new gel reapplied, Expensive yes but worth considering if you want nails that look smart with no chips. Clearly when you decide to no longer have gel nails your nails are left in a weakened condition but no long lasting damage though.

I have bio sculpture gel, I have very strong and long nails and I have to wash my hands with every patient at wsrk so 20 times plus a day plus bathing two dc every day and I have mine done every 3 weeks. I have french costs me 19 pounds and I have had it for the last 7 years now, acrylic did not suit me, too false looking, not my cup of tea.

Whilst it might be ok for your nails, CloudsOfWitness (and sounds like it's working ok for you), you are strongly discouraged from peeling gel nails off as it removes the top layer, weakening (and dulling) your nails considerably.

I like a french manicure with bio sculpture gel when I have enough time / money for regular maintenance, but made the mistake to go to a cheaper nail place for "gel nails" recently, and they ruined my nails completely. Whilst a bit of buffing needed for the gel to stick well, they filed too deep, almost like needed for acrylic, so now I've got that horrible telltale dent when without gel. I've decided to let it grow out whilst wearing clear polish. Annoying though, wish I haven't had it done in the first place.
