Does anyone recommend these? I've been meaning to get one for about 25 years now! I've got long, thick, slightly wavy hair & usually share my 3 year old daughter's tangle teezer, but we have had a letter from the nursery today warning of a nit outbreak! So I thought it was time I got my own. The MP ones are very expensive. Are they worth it?

yes. My lovely gran had one. I want one now too. Sad

I finally bought one last year after many years of lusting after but not indulging.

My fine, flyaway long hair really benefits from its use. Sounds odd but I rarely brushed my hair prior to buying one because it would always end up static-y and crap looking. Since using one regularly, I find that the natural bristles stimulate the oils in my scalp and therefore help the dryness problem. My hair just looks healthier than before.

Plus there is something terrifically indulgent about brushing your hair with a fab hair brush

Tulpe
Which one did you get?

am just off to bed but will take a look and report back in the morning :)

Eeek! Just spent £60 on one for my DDs, we have tantrums every morning when I attempt to wrestle with their hair. They are only 1 and 3yo, so I hope the ridiculously expensive hairbrush gets full use over the years!

Sorry to put a downer on this, but Mason Pearson brushes are the worst type of brush you can use, they wreck the hair. Best to use a comb when the hair's wet (tangle teasers are ok too), and if using a brush, one with widely spaced plastic prongs. Mason Pearson are popular because they're seen as very traditional, and are easy to get through the hair, but that's because they tear through the knots.

I covet.

I have a vidal sassoon set which is nice but it's not a MP. Dammit.

I agree with combing the hair with a wide tooth comb when wet but MP are great on dry hair. I have been using them for years - they are lovely. However, one of my DD friends who is a klepto stole my large v expensive one and being a bit hard up I bought a DEnman one that looks very similar for about £8 in Boots and its great too - and have recently bought the smaller versions for all of DD's handbags/school.

Could try the Denman one if you wnat to try that style of padded brush first without committing over £50 to a MP. Wil try to find a Boots link for you.

We have one large bristle one, and I got it three years ago, I felt very guilty about spending so much on a hairbrush but it does calm down my frizzy thick hair a bit and having two girls with long hair it gets lots of use. It is the one my daughter with the longest hair always hunts down to brush her hair with and I take more care of it because of the cost so I have not lost it unlike other cheapy ones. Although don't expect miracles-in the end to tame my hair I have gone down the brazillion blow dry route!

I'm not sure which one to go for. I've got long, thick, slightly wavy hair & one MP site directed me towards the nylon bristles but boar bristles (or the mix) do sound nicer. Anyone with similar hair to me & an MP already care to recommend one? It's a lot of money if it's not right.

I used to use them and they were ok but switched to Aveda paddle brushes about 10 years ago and prefer them

spongefingerssavedmylife · 11/04/2011 13:13

I have a bristle one and definately get less static with it.
