For those of you heavy of leg, but intimidated out of wide-leg linen trousers: I have found your summer trouser

Much consternation was created the other day when it was suggested that wide-leg linen trousers are somehow off-the-scale, style-wise. Those of us not blessed in the leg department, and for whom therefore white jeans/skinny cargoes etc etc cannot possibly be on the agenda, were thrown into disarray: when jeans are too hot, what the hell are we allowed to wear??!

Well, today I bought two pairs of pleated top, sit on the hip, gently tapered trousers in medium-weight cotton (one in navy, the other dark sand) which are cut really generously in the leg. I am tall, a size 12, but my legs are massive (calves 43cm) all the way up. These trousers hide all and are really comfy - I put mine on as soon as I got home. And with the right top & shoes will look (I hope) vaguely on-trend. They were £18 each! From Sainsburys!

I can't post a link as they're not on the website, but go, ladies, go! They're starting to run out of the smaller sizes!

lol

I can't wear pleated tops. They make my thighs look really, really ginormous as DS would say.
I will continue to wear jeans until it gets unbearable then shave my legs and break out the A-line cotton skirts.

BornToFolk · 07/04/2011 13:36

Forgot to say, thanks for the tip and well done for getting a bargain!

Fimbo · 07/04/2011 13:36

I have a hideous image of these trews in my head for some reason. Sorry Scamp I know you are trying to be helpful Blush.

ethelina · 07/04/2011 13:38

Well I am staying in my last-season pregnancy-big-elastic-waist 3/4length trousers with tie bottoms. They're so bloody comfy they will have to be prized of me. Grin.

Seriously, I am on maternity pay so no shopping trips for me this summer Sad

ethelina · 07/04/2011 13:38

off. !

scampadoodle · 07/04/2011 13:44

No, honestly Fimbo, they're great. Very simple (they come with a crappy little belt but I took that off) & just like some I tried on in H&M yesterday but with more room in the leg. I've rolled the legs up slightly so they're above ankle and they'd look good with flat brogues, although I've got loafers on today.

Maybe I'm over-excited because I find it horrendously difficult to find trousers that fit me in the leg. And although I'm tall enough to get away with a wide-leg, I find them a bit flappy. And they can be a tad Isadora Duncan on the old bicycle... Grin

I shall look.

mollymole · 07/04/2011 13:46

if you want to wear wide leg linen trousers then do so - stuff what others think !!

RightUpMyRue · 07/04/2011 13:51

I bought the same trousers (got the blue ones in the sale, down to £8) and they are very wearable, not exactly the height of style but good, everyday, comfortable trousers. Like you say nice with loafers and pumps etc.

Beware though, the blue ones will dye your legs, and white pants, if you wear them without washing them first.

scampadoodle · 07/04/2011 14:01

mollymole: I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek...

They sound quite similar to the ones I have just got in Next of all places - mine are medium-heavy weight cotton, nicely tapered, barely pleated at the top - take note Born! - with a decent waistband, back pockets and quite flattering on my (ahem) generous rear, and very soft and comfortable without being hideously unstructured. You could wear them rolled up or full length. They are the roll up cotton chinos on this page

Who knew that there was non-jean trouser life for pears beyond the wide-leg linen trouser?

scampadoodle · 07/04/2011 17:29

Pear yourself, aquavit - I am a very definite hourglass! Grin

Scamp are they generous in the thigh area? (Buying trousers makes me despair Sad) Will have a look though. Sainsburys clothes are def worth a look. I was quite impressed last time I was there.

GeorginaWorsley · 07/04/2011 17:43

I've got them too!
Bought a grey pair a few weeks ago, reduced to £4!
I wore them yesterday, rolled up,and gor loads of compliments.

scampadoodle · 07/04/2011 17:46

Yes, BendyBob, very! I fitted into the 14, though waist was a bit big (I went up a size to be sure of the leg) but they didn't hang right so I got a 16 Blush which is far too big on the waist but fine if you wear them on the hip with a belt, and they are super-roomy without being harem-like IYSWIM. I have a small waist - 27" - but my thighs are truly humungous (bane of my sartorial life).

Oooh, thanks aquavit, I will go and try those on. They don't look too pleaty at all and I like the colours.

aquavit · 08/04/2011 11:51

scamp I do apologise. I sometimes forget that not everyone has bee-sting norks Grin

aquavit · 08/04/2011 11:53

Born I love them, I am wearing them today rolled up with flip flops and they are so very comfy AND really quite chic

BendyBob · 08/04/2011 14:31

Just got back onto mn - Thanks so much Scamp. Right, off to look in Sainsburys then at the weekend.

It's also nice to know we're not alone wrt to this - I so so envy women who slide easily into trousersEnvy.

My own dd's thankfully take after dh's family not me when it comes to legs and will never have these issues. I console myself that yes I have a smaller top and nice waist, but oh for an easy life on the trouser front! Hmm
