Wigs

This is a genuine question (am aware it may sound a bit weird/like a piss-take!). I have short hair and love it, but sometimes long for a change and would love to have long hair so I have the option of putting it up in a sexy-secretary-type bun, or a beehive. Does anyone wear a wig for purely cosmetic reasons like this, and if so how do you find it and where do you get nice ones? My DP says wigs probably smell and/or look obvious and cheap, and are hot and itchy. I'm naively optimistically thinking that modern wigs are more sophisticated than that.

Anyone?

Look online for ideas. I did a bit of research on short wigs and concluded that they were ok. The more expensive ones are better crafted and therefore more realistic, but apparently real hair ones are no better than synthetic. Try Periwig and Wigs Online (sorry can't do links) for starters. If you live in/near a city, there are bound to be places where you can try on. If desperate, try the NHS as they will have wigmaker contacts for patients with hair loss.

For cheaper alternatives try www.annabelswigs.co.uk or www.pakscosmetics.co.uk

Or if you want something more "real" looking then Google "lace front wigs" or "human hair wigs"

Wigs generally don't tie up in a bun or an up do very realistically because of the way they are made and the way the sit on your head but you can get one that's been made in that style (which you won't be able to wear down).

kittens, oh, I didn't know they didn't go in a realistic updo. I wouldn't want to wear it down (only want long hair so I can put it up), so maybe getting one made in an updo is the way to go ...

Thanks!

Well you might be able to do an up do with a really expensive hand knotted wig but that will cost a lot.

MoonGirl1981 · 02/04/2011 11:43

I had a wig when I had pink hair and my boss told me it would 'scare' the residents at work - bonkers, they all loved it.

You can't really put them up, if you do it becomes very obvious that it's a wig.

I'll also be honest and say that they are VERY hot, and VERY itchy when I wore mine in winter, will obvously be much worse in summer.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Sorry.

Kinda cosy in the winter though Wink. Not so itchy if you wear a wig cap underneath.

You also have to make sure you don't have any smartarse friends who think they are "Funny" by pulling it off your head in the middle of a crowded bar/club and throwing it out of reach - which is what happened to me once.

No, Moon, thanks for the honest real-life advice ? that's what I was after! Perhaps I should just grow my hair long and always wear it up ... But I do love my short crop sometimes, especially with nice frocks, and it's so low-maintenance ...

kittens, Christ, what a horrible thing to do!

I got all mine from ebay - shipped from America and a fraction of the price of most British suppliers.

Is your hair long enough to tie into a very short ponytail? If so you can get various clip-on hair pieces which would give you options for buns etc. You can also get fringe wigs, but I don't know if you can get these with hair going in both directions to form a beehive?

The trouble with putting a normal wig 'up' is the joins at the edges of the wig. A lot of the fronts will have skin tops, where there is a layer of flesh coloured rubber to disguise the join, or a fringe or hairband. The sides are harder to conceal, unless maybe you had a thick alice band around the whole edge, but that might not give the effect you are after.

My advice would be to have a look at the wig section on ebay and see if you can see anything you like.

How about this one?!!

BringBackGoingForGold · 02/04/2011 12:47

Thanks, cattle. No, my hair's really short ? inch and a bit at the front/top perhaps, and shorter everywhere else.

Ebay is a good place to start. I wear wigs for medical reasons. However I do prefer to buy from UK wig shops. As I have to wear wigs often I prefer real natural looking wigs. I've tried buying from Aliexpress for cheaper alternatives but always end up with bag hair. However if you are only looking for cosmetic reasons then I guess you do not want to spend too much. Mora Mode is the lady I buy my wigs from on ebay which are pretty good ones.

SammyTait · 27/11/2018 12:17

Thank you @Chique26

I tried the wigs at Moramode and I am more than pleased. The wig is almost identical to my own bio hair. I am very grateful for the recommendation as these wigs are a hidden gem. I've had the wig for 2 months and its held up well. The lace is unbelievable!
