I really need to do this, but am a bit scared. Who can advise me on the safest way to do it?

i have used the kits you buy in superdrug for about £5, a mouth guard, activator, gel and whitening toothapste. good and simple to use, excellent if you only want a few shades lighter. the gel tastes foul if you get any on your tongue, but very good results for the price and if you don;t mind topping up every 6 weeks or so.

I just had mine UV whitened at smile clininc in the oracle shopping centre in reading. fab results and told should last at least a year. Cost £199 and took just over an hour. I had 3 lots of gel applied in 15 minute intervals. that made mine white enough for me, white enough that they look clean and hygenic but not so white that they blind people.

My teeth were quite yellow through years of only drinking full fat coca cola or pepsi during my teens, and not helped by red wine. I've never smoked or been a big drinker of tea or coffee.

Neither of the two ways that i have used hurt in anyway. slightly uncomfortable and dribbly with the mouth guard in but no pain involved and my teeth haven't been anymore sensitive since the whitening.

Thanks hotchpotch. I'm going to try this. I bought some stuff over the internet but the results were good but not long lasting.

I had mine done at the dentists, had the moulds made and got the peroxide for £250.
Guigelines say do it for an hour or 2 every evening for 2 weeks. I slept in mine and it did make my teeth more sensitive. I top up occasionally but they're still white but not dazzling.

I got mine laser whitened at the dentists then had the guards and gel as a follow up. Great results. Crest whitestrips are great for a home solution or top up. You won't get really white teeth with the kits sold in chemists as they just don't have the peroxide content.
Rembrandt toothpaste with peroxide is excellent for stained teeth.

Thank you very much, all! Tried making an appointment with the laser woman who is local to me, and she is booked until June. Will see if there is another clinic nearby.

I've just bought a kit from Whiter Than White - haven't sent off the impressions yet.

I'm worried about sensitivity too, but they recommended a re-mineralising gel which you use when you're going through the process. I'm scared of the UV version as at least this way I can stop when the pain starts, rather than going the whole hog and being in agony afterwards.

I know it will hurt because I had trays from the dentist years ago, and could only use them for three nights running. Was a long process but it did give some improvement.
