If you have curly hair, how do you style it?

What products do you use, and do you leave it to dry/hairdryer etc?

I have naturally curly, highlighted hair, and I normally blow dry it straight.

However, due to breakage issues and the fact that I am trying to grow it, I have decided to start wearing it curly, but it just always looks a bit "through a hedge backwards".

So any tips greatly appreciated.

I straighten mine, sorry!
Since having kids it has gone strange, some bits are straight, others are curly so it never "works" properly. I used to love having the choice of straight or curly hair.

BOF and Trillianastra have amazing curly hair, hope they see this thread Smile

I leave mine to dry naturally having tamed the curls with curl creme and wrapped big sections round my fingers to give smooth big curls.

I do straighten it too with moroccan oil through it, blowdry then ghd.

Sometimes I run oil through it and pin it up in a French twist until its near dry then unpin and have long waves. The oil is great at creating smooth waves.

Well, thank you very much, Lizzylou Grin

MrsR, your hair sounds like mine. I follow the Curly Girl Method, which works very well for me, and have also bought some pure argan oil from a health shop to use to tame any frizz. It is the key ingredient in the Morrocan Hair Oil products, but minus the silicone and the price tag.

MrsRyanReynolds · 31/03/2011 17:33

Thanks all! Smile

I am interested in this Moroccan Oil - one of my friends swears by it, but I wasn't sure if it was a treatment, a serum or what. Confused

Anyway, will definitely be looking at getting some Argan Oil.

Do you wash your hair with conditioner then BOF? I did get some hair cleansing cream (cannot think for the life of me what it was called, think it was Wen??) a while ago which was great the first few times, but after a while I just felt like my hair needed a good wash!

Generally, yeah. I use the silicone-free Original Source Tea Tree- you can get it in Boots and Superdrug for £1-2. if my hair feels really dirty, I use a special nasties-free shampoo occasionally, which i got from the health shop. I use Boots pink curl creme (again, v. cheap, tiny amount, well-emulsified in my hands first) after washing, then a tiny bit of oil.

Between washes, and instead of combing, I refresh with a spritz or two from a spray bottle containing water, a few drops of argan oil and some lavender oil, and just re-scrunch the curl.

BoF, I just nosed at your profile to see if I could admire your hair and I adore your puppy! ( and your dc's are quite cute too!). Any chance of a curly pic?

BitOfFun · 31/03/2011 20:59

I did have curly pics, but they are all on my defunct laptop Sad

I can link one on flickr, but it's a bit rudey. Hang on a sec...

I do curly girl too, although I do shampoo it every now and then. I use the boots pink stuff and boots purple gel on soaking wet hair which I find helps with my frizz issues. I some times use a diffuser, but hold it still against my hair, then turn it off and reposition it rather than moving it around and blowing my frizz hair about. When it's dry I'll gently scrunch it cos it can go a bit crispy.

MrsRyanReynolds · 31/03/2011 21:41

Ooh BOF you sexy mama! Grin

Your hair is lovely too.

Excellent - I'll have a proper look at the curly girl tomorrow.

Ooh you sexy minx! How do you find the time!! Was far too distracted to admire your hair!

BitOfFun · 31/03/2011 22:25

I'll ask them to delete the link now before I make too much of a spectacle of myself Grin

I shampoo my hair as infrequently as I can get away with it (didn't realise this had an official "Curly Girl" name!).

While wet I apply curl creme and twizzle small sections into ringlets and allow to dry naturally.

When finished I look like that person in the middle on the Will Young video over there on the right ->

controlpantsandgladrags · 01/04/2011 15:00

With my curly hair the key is definitely to leave it to dry naturally........the minuite a hairdryer goes near it it goes horrifically frizzy. I use a curl creme too. Keep meaning to try moroccan oil, but for that price I'd want a cast iron guarantee that it would actually work!!

Quenelle · 01/04/2011 16:54

So does washing with conditioner get all the curl creme out? I use Trevor Sorbie curl creme at the moment and tried the Curly Girl method but my hair was so coated within a couple of days I had to get the shampoo out again.

Is Boots curl creme better than TS?

Pinkjenny · 01/04/2011 16:58

I can't get on with curl creme at all. My curls just lack definition and seem a bit lank. I use Aveeda shampoo, Aussie Miracle leave in conditioner, and John Frieda Curl Reviver mousse.

I would stress that John Frieda serum is shite, but the mousse is great.

I pop the mousse in, leaving big patches of it all over the carpet Grin and then leave it to dry naturally. Once done though, I generally think it looks better the next day, when it's settled down a bit.

BitOfFun · 01/04/2011 17:00

It's recommended for the Curly Girl method, so I assume that some others contain silicones, which will build up and weigh hair down unless you wash with shampoo. That's the problem really- the silicone/sulphates cycle which ends up drying curls out. Breaking out of it needs a bit of patience, but lots of people find it's worth it.

MayorNaze · 01/04/2011 17:10

I use Boots curl creme and also Umberto Gianni gel. Someone has recommended to me Aveda Go Curly which is quite expensive. Has anyone here used it?
