Knitted Hat for a Larger Lady

I am making a hat for a neighbour, who is larger, in her 50s, and dresses quite sensibly. It will be dark blue.

I'm wavering about the style, particularly the brim. (I have asked her for a preference, but she doesn't have one.)

I can do:

  • ribbed brim, that she could fold up. This seems a bit overly butch
  • rolled brim. This seems a bit overly cute, but the most tempting option.
  • a zig-zaggy sort of edge - some textures give this, and I'm quite tempted to do this as I think it will be cute as a hat ... but it seems a bit elven, a bit ... not for the larger lady. Not for the older lady? Something.

I'm ok with the knitting, it's the style that has me stumped.

Sorry, no help at all, but what a marvellous thread title

(if I had to choose, it would be the rolled brim, but I am not expert. Wonder if anyone is. "And your specialist subject is: Knitted hat styles for the Larger Lady." Sorry. Really not helpful.)

Yeah, I think it's going to be a rolled brim.

I need to think of someone I know who the wavy brim style would suit, as I would like to do one like that. (Not me! I'm also larger, and pretty butch.)

Is the mythical expert on this subject around this morning?

I think I'm going to do a rolled brim, with a "dragon scales" pattern, as it looks a bit like fish scales, and she likes fish.

Blimey, it sounds like quite a hat! If I didn't know you're a regular, I would be half wondering if this was a wind up - it has seriously tickled me....

Isn't hat suitability more to do with face shape than size iyswim? I have a round face and can only really wear hats that are square at the top. Anything else looks like I'm balancing a bowling ball on my shoulders

Hmm, she has a round face, but I can't knit a square hat.

franny, it won't be as busy as it sounds, it's all in dark blue. And the dragon scales thing is just a texture effect, fairly subtle. (And it'll only work if the math does - it's a 26-stitch-wide pattern.)

Bet you could NQC

What about this? Very of the moment too

I'd never looked into knitted hats until this morning and this thread. Meanwhile breakfast is not getting prepared....

How on earth is that hat made? It looks like it might involve sewing up ...

I've had a bit of a dig and not found a pattern for it, although I have found a hat-pattern book on Amazon ... hmmm
