See your GP. I have hypothyroidism and although it causes thinning of the hair it definitely doesn't fall out in clumps.

atswimtwolengths · 28/03/2011 22:23

You should see your GP. Have you recently had a child? Are you on any medication? What's your diet like?

Rexy · 28/03/2011 22:24

I have hair loss and the first stop was to my Dr for a blood test to eliminate Anaemia,Thyroid etc.

I now take hair vits with Kelp in it as recommended by the Health Food shop. Slowly my hair is coming back.

I wash it with Tea Tree shampoo from Holland and Barret which is Organic.

Good luck.

GP for thyroid check as number 1 priority.

I had a big hair loss a couple of years ago, totally out of the blue. I had my thyroid tested and it was fine. GP thought it might have been related to a very bad virus I had which coincided with a bacterial sinus infection. The hair loss happened about 3 months after the infection which can happen sometimes apparently. In my case it was self-limiting and I guess I'll never know what caused it for definite.

I hope you get some answers - I know I found it really distressing.

Definitely go to the GP. There are lots of medical reasons why you might be losing your hair and most of them are treatable so that your hair grows back or it halts the fall out. I had a similar problem and was referred to a dermatologist who dignosed me as having a form of alopaecia which was at an early stage and so treatable with medication, which i took for about 18months. My hair is thinner now but it has stopped the fall out and some has grown back. The problem may reoccur but now I know that something can be done about it.

btw, I was looking at expesnive hair loss clinics at the time but somebody told me to try my GP first. Thank heavens I did.

good gel

Carrotsandcelery · 28/03/2011 22:30

Nourkrin for H&B helped my Mum enormously with thinning hair. It is expensive and you have to take it for a long time though.
I use Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner which stimulates the scalp to encourage hair growth. It is also expensive but it does work.

I would ask your gp though as my thin hair stems from an underactive thyroid.

Katisha · 28/03/2011 22:38

Have you lost weight recently? That can cause it to fall out.

cheesesarnie · 28/03/2011 22:42

ive always been underweight.no idea on weight at the moment but know when i last weighed in january i was bit too underweight.no idea if ive lost more.

just an update-went to see gp yesterday.booked for blood tests on monday.said could just be hormones but could be thyroid, aneamia, diabeties, liver, kidney or even menopause although said unlikely because of age.
i hate blood tests but thankyou all for telling me to go to gp.
