Oil Cleansing Method - Help!

vinorosado · 28/03/2011 16:40

So I got my castor oil and almond oil and have done the OCM twice at the end of last week but seem to have come out in more spots than usual Hmm Is this normal to start with? Those of you that do the OCM do you do so every day, once a day? Does it work for you really well? Those of you that tried it and didn't like it why not? Wondering if it works for everyone, should have posted before I got the oils really.

Thanks in advance for any tips. I really want this to work for me as it seems to make complete sense and is all natural, I want my skin to look tip top for summer!

when you say almond oil, do you mean sweet almond oil?
I have to say, I would use just the SWA alone, or even Jojoba as it's the closest to the skin's natural sebum, castor oil can be very heavy.
otherwise, why not use an oil based cleansing balm? they are solid until you rub in between your hands, then they become oily, but are the perfect consistency to do a cleanse.

vinorosado · 28/03/2011 18:25

Thanks so much for your reply MissFoodie, yep, it's Sweet Almond Oil. I thought you had to use between 10% and 30% Castor Oil as this is the bit that cleansed, mixed with another, lighter oil. Maybe will try without the castor.

Castor oil can cause reactions for some people and if so best to reduce the % or omit.

I can't use it - felt itchy after the 1st use and then the next time itchier - tried one more go and got little itchy red spots. I get on much better without it if I want to oil cleanse.

Someone on here recommended using the Waitrose baby bottom butter (whipped up olive oil) on a thread recently, and I've been trying it instead of the castor oil mix and much prefer it. My skin got really dry and itchy with castor oil. And it's much less faff.

vinorosado · 28/03/2011 19:33

Thanks for your replies tangerina and Gently, yes, this is exactly what I have, dry skin and red little itchy spots.

So general concensus is no castor oil. Shall proceed as advised... Thanks again.

(No Waitrose in Spain for BBB unfortunately, Gently)

Ha - there must be a million MNers that could sent you a part-used pot after all the furore about it being as good as 8-hour cream last year!

OhCobblers · 28/03/2011 20:58

sorry to be a bore as i know its been discussed a hundred time but could someone possibly spare 5 mins to post the actual method as i'd like to give this a go but no idea where to start?

i have dry, sensitive skin so this sounds like a smart move? TIA

MissFoodie · 28/03/2011 20:59

Vinorosado, where abouts are you in Spain???? I grew up there so can probably give you some pointers! I recently found a v good website that sells natural/organic skincare in Spain, a lot of UK brands also.
Def try the SAO on it's own, or Jojoba; if you're coming to the UK soon or have visitors, I've reviewed loads of cleansers (cream and oil) that are great, and suitable for all budgets, if you're interested check me out on yumetc.blogspot.com

Will check out your blog MissFoodie thanks. I have visitors in a week so that is very good timing! I am in Valencia, the herboristas here are great (where I got the oil from - it is special Castor oil for skin) but, as I say, not working too well. Will give the SAO a go on its own now.

OhCobblers you are supposed to massage a mix of castor oil and another oil, olive, jojoba, almond (basically one that doesn't block pores) at a ratio of 10% castor oil and 90% rest of other oil into your skin for 2 mins. Then, with a hot cloth/flannel, steam your face to open the pores and then splash it to get rid of oil (the oil is supposed to disolve the dirt in your pores which is then steamed out) then splash face with cold water to close clean pores Then, if skin is dry, add a tiny, tiny bit of oil on face and massage in. If you have oily skin you use more castor oil - say 20 or 30%, in your mix.

However, as everyone else has said, it seems this castor oil addition is a bit irritating to the skin. I am now going to try without. See above! Hope this helps and makes sense.

Off to read MissFoodies blog now!

I tried this for a few days with plain sunflower or olive oils. I didn't even get as far as the castor oil bit before giving up because my skin was so dry and sore :(, even only using it a couple of times a week.

MissFoodie · 28/03/2011 22:13

yep, no sunflower oil, see?!
the best are sweet almond or jojoba

DonaAna · 29/03/2011 14:59

Oil cleansing isn't for everyone. I tried it for about a week and broke out in massive cystic acne pustules, about one per each day of oil cleansing. When I stopped, the acne stopped too - but I needed a long time to heal and some of the scars are still visible.

Some natural oils are highly or moderately comedogenic.I have problems with most moisturizers and skin oils - so pay it simply may not work for you.

I use baby oil to remove make-up, but that only works if I use soap or cream cleanser afterwards. If not, I get bad breakouts.

MissFoodie · 30/03/2011 12:29

DonaAna, if you want to use just oil, then Sweet Almond or Jojoba are the best - please don't use Baby Oil, its bad for your skin and the environment!
Vinorosado, have just published 3rd feature on cleansers, so there must be at least one you can try? ;) yumetc.blogspot.com
