Too casual for a wedding?

JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 21:20

Going to DBro's wedding at the beginning of May when I'll be about six weeks post-birth and breastfeeding. It's not a formal set up (taking place at SIL's family home) but I don't want to look like something the cat dragged in as my mother will judge me.

As well as being limited by the breastfeeding (first DC so not exactly sure what will be suitable) I am on the larger side, size 20/22.

I like this dress and think I can fancy it up with nice shrug/cami/shoes/jewellery etc or is it just too casual?

Well I don't know your usual style but lordy that dress is umm a bit like a dirty dish-rag. Am sure we can find something better.

The only thing I'd say is that bf may be a bit tricksy in a dress depending on how confident you are feeling (have bf 3 babies and definitely found separates easier in the early days)

What colours do you like - I think the style was ok apart from the tucked in your knickers hem Wink this one much prettier

Do you like that sort of grungey All Saintsy type look?

MrsCampbellBlack · 26/03/2011 21:29

In fact I'd be tempted to go for something like ankle lenght black trousers, little cami/vest top (2 tops for ease/discreet bf) and something like this on top.

With heels and nice cuff.

JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 21:34

Bit of straight talking there Grin

I do like a loose sort of look, not into anything too figure hugging/formal/uptight. And no bright patterns or colours, it has a drag queen effect. A wrap top and trousers would be good I think but can't find decent smart trousers - wide leg linen ones always make me look twice as big.

I really like this but know maxis are controversial. I have worn one before though and thought it looked fine. It would work for bf with a cardi/shrug.

Also this and this, just not sure about the bottom half and suitability for bfing.

Really like that jacket MrsCB but sadly doesn't go up to my size.

Sorry, agree with MrsCB, that dress looks hideous ....

What about wrap dress you can BF in:

julipa

isabella oliver goes up to size 20

There are some 20% Isabella oliver codes floating about too..altho they are maternity you can wear post pregnancy too...

thenightsky · 26/03/2011 22:20

OP step away from that dress that looks like summat from Primark after the fire!

colours darling, you need colours.

JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 22:22

Hmm yes I think wrap dress or top may be the way to go. I do have a black maternity wrap dress that would be fine a few weeks after the birth but felt it was a bit dull for a daytime outdoor summery wedding.

OP posts:
JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 22:23

Ok I am definitely off that first dress now Grin

But colours make me look like fat RuPaul

madammecholet · 26/03/2011 22:23

OK, wear black wrap and mix it with a bright pink pashmina/scarf (which will help with breastfeeding, bright pink heels and a clutch?

Or any other bright summery colour, yellow/lime green/purple...etc etcc...

madammecholet · 26/03/2011 22:24

Accessorise with colour then, don't cover yourself in it - far more chic..Smile

blinks · 26/03/2011 22:35

THIS dress is nice in the BLACK (not so keen on the patterns), it's got a waterfall shape so brilliant for hiding bumps and would only need some nice accessorise to look a bit more individual. good price too.

blinks · 26/03/2011 22:37

i totally disagree with wrap dresses being flattering after a baby.... only with major sucky inny underwear. you want something flowy so you can relax IMO.

JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 22:38

That is doable madamme, I have colourful scarves, jewellery and shoes. I suppose I should play it safe, glam up the black wrap then I'm not buying something that will only get worn once - of course I will be much slimmer by the time I'm next invited to a wedding Hmm. It is pretty awkward timing.

I actually like that dress but think it is totally unsuitable for a wedding!

nextchapter · 26/03/2011 22:48

I like the green asos maxi personally

KristinaM · 26/03/2011 22:55

Sorry to be so personal....but do you have big norks? Because mine are only 32f when not bf and they were huge when I was bf. So you will need to be extremely well supported. And plan your wardrobe around what works over an industrial strength bra

I prefered separates for bf but I know that lots of women find wrap dresses ok. I preferred to stick baby up top rather than pull boobs out. But that's just me

Also I was still bleediing quite heavily after 6 weeks. TMI I know

And you have at least a one in 4 chance that you might end up with a c section ( so you won't want anything tight or fitted)

And if not, a odds on chance that you will have stitches somewhere elsewhere

Sorry to be so blunt. But these things make me think that black wrap dress and bright accessories might be the way to go

Although you mentioned maxi dresses? I think they are fine for a wedding as long as they are not remotely bridesmaid like.

JeelyPiece · 26/03/2011 23:06

Ah good a vote for the ASOS maxi! I do like that one. I am generously norked, will probably be an F cup while bfing (D before pregnancy, E getting tight now). But was thinking that as my shoulders and arms won't be exposed due to shrug/cardi, I could get away with wearing a normal nursing bra under the bandeau maxi rather than trying to find a strapless bra... is that a total no-no?

I was thinking about the bleeding/scar issue too, hmm. Maxi or black wrap would be ok on that front. Baby is 8 days late already and better hurry up so I can start trying on outfits Grin

OP posts:
KristinaM · 26/03/2011 23:30

I don't see why your nursing bra under a shrug plan wouldn't work. Are you going to pull down the top of the dress to feed and cover up with a shawl pashmina thingy? sorry I have no experience of bf in a dress, I wore separates for 5 years!!!!

Sorry to be so gross about blood and scars

What you MUST do is have your hair and nails done for the day.
