After giving birth in August I am doing the whole hairdo, pamper myself thing next week....I am sick of shaving, the last few waxes I went for were a nightmare, anyone recommend epliators?

Epilators hurt when you first use them.

I will not lie to you. I wondered what the hell I was doing to myself.

However hair re-growth is much less. Also softer, paler hairs.

Next epilation - hairs come away so much easier and painless.

Each time less frequent and less feeling.

Now - no pain at all, just a little stinging sensation that is almost negligable.

Have been epilating legs and underarms for 10 years and on my 2nd epilator. It is a Braun and was about £40.00 3-4 years ago.

The range on the market have become very sophisticated lately so I wouldn't really like to advise, other than to say Braun are sturdy, reliable and this one does a really good job.

I do recommend epilation, though.

Ooops you do your pits Shock I tried once.

Never again.

Iggly - I hardly feel it now. It's like a tickle.

The first few times I had to use some Aloe Vera gel as the skin went quite red and angry and bumpy.

OP - have some Aloe Vera gel to hand. You can get a small bottle for 99p at my local chemist. Don't do any area of your body that is going to be on show in case you get the red bumpy effect (it's just where the hairs have been tugged out).

I notice you say you are going to do this in August. I would suggest you wait until the weather is cooler so you don't irritate your skin more than necessary and can keep covered if your skin reacts.

I do my bikini line too, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone until they are happy with the legs/underarms scenario.

Oooops you've inspired me to think again about using one. I did get on ok with it on my legs, then broke it (caught on clothes..!!) and bought a cheaper replacement which was rubbish.

Yes - I once managed to epilate a fluffy dressing gown. Grin

Waste of a lovely dressing gown!

It was also the reason I had to buy a new epliator otherwise my original one might have still been de-fuzzing.

Grin I'll have to set up a no clothes zone for my first attempt!

Braun silk-epil for me here.
I got the smaller one thinking it would be OK but you might as well go for the full-size one and all the initial pain it may involve! Actually, I found it didn't hurt on my legs - just took a long time to do.

I got the Braun Silk-Epil Xelle one recently, very happy with it so far. I took the advice on another thread here and did a leg wax first (did it myself with the Veet strips), then used the epilator on the regrowth. It was fine, not really painful at all, just a 'prickling' sensation really. The second time hardly felt anything at all.

Armpits were really quite sore the first time, I have to admit. I didn't wax them though (never have), just epilated the regrowth from shaving, so that might have made a difference. It's much better on the second time though, and I expect it will be as painless as legs after a while. Haven't tried 'bikini area' yet...

I did get quite alarming red bumps appearing on my skin especially the first time, but no worse than I get with waxing, and it was fine by the next morning.

I also read somewhere that it's a good idea to take a couple of paracetomal about 20 minutes before you do it to take away the worst of the discomfort.

Obviously I haven't done this for years but I think I did for the first 3 times I epilated.

I have a Brazilian Wax at a salon now and use paracetomal for that and it definitely helps.
