Cold sore patches on chin acne?

I suffer from hormonal acne which manifests itself as one or two large, painful hard pink lumps on my chin every month. (This can be a symptom of PCOS but I've never been disgnosed.)

The only thing that's ever worked for me has been dermatologist-prescribed Retin-A gel, but I'm pregnant now and can't use it (risk of birth defects).

(In my last pregnancy my skin was lovely, but it's gone to pot this time.)

I've also got a cold sore, so I went to Boots and bought every pregnancy-safe cold sore remedy going, including some cold sore patches.

At home the other evening I stuck a patch on my cold sore and thought "what the hell" and stuck one on my latest spot, just to see what happened. The patches seem to be similar to blister plasters for your feet. When I took it off, my cold sore looked much better. When I took it off the spot, the pain had gone. It wept a bit, and was pink where the patch had been, but once the weeping had stopped the inflammation was reduced and it wasn't painful any more. It was much easier to cover with concealer and I couldn't feel it anymore.

Has anyone else tried this and what did you think? Is there any medical reason why this is a bad idea?
