I have the hands of a pensioner and I'm only 35

My hands are itchy and dry and crepey. I use hand cream several times a day, always wear gloves for washing up and occasionally cover them in vaseline before bed. I'm also trying to drink more water because when I pull the skin on the back of my hands, it stays up in little peaks! Confused

What else can I do to de-oap them that's not going too cost much?

My mum swears by Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream.

If mine get so bad they crack and bleed i use Bepanthem nappy cream! its very good.

zisforzebra · 26/03/2011 17:35

Thanks Amberleaf, I'll give it a go.

ok - you need to wear cotton gloves inside your rubber gloves as this will be exasperating it problem.
also get some aveeno hand cream - it will work wonders - it is lanolin free so v kind to sore hands.

ValiumSingleton · 26/03/2011 17:52

Elizabeth Arden cream is just vaseline. It wont do anything that vaseline won't do. The nappy cream would be a barrier cream so that would be a better suggestion (but still take all your usual precautions as well) Have just done a project on contact dermatitis, funnily enough, twas so exciting Confused Grin Is their latex in the gloves you're using?

mrslurkalot · 26/03/2011 17:55

Mine were the same, bleeding and sore. Try Aveeno cream, it's all natural and has worked wonders on my hands!

moragbellingham · 26/03/2011 18:52

Mine go from cheese-grater texture with bleeding knuckles and flaky palms (lovely) and back regularly.

I have tried most hand creams and am using a variety at the moment - Palmers cocoa, L'Occitane Shea but do find that the only one that really works is Kiehl's Ultimate salve. At £14-19 I can't afford it but know it would sort them out in a few days.
Even E45 used to sting like b**y but this stuff is good!

I am going to now try AveenoWink though.

Pagwatch · 26/03/2011 18:53

Give them back.

amberleaf · 27/03/2011 10:01

Think il give Aveeno a go too.

Valium re latex, im allergic so i cant wear washing up gloves...which then leads to dry/sore hands with all the washing up! i tried cotton gloves underneath but was just too much of a pallaver.

CeliaFate · 27/03/2011 10:43

Go to the gp and ask for an emollient cream for eczema. I use Diprobase on my hands and it's ace! A huge tub, I'm in Wales so prescriptions are free (thank God!). Exfoliate with a sugar and warm olive oil mix. It works wonders. Also try Oilatum in a bowl of warm water to soak.

LindaLaPlumeDeMaTente · 27/03/2011 10:44

wear sunscreen on the backs of your hands

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 27/03/2011 10:54

Pagwatch Smile

Pinkflipflop · 27/03/2011 11:05

Use ultrasun on them everyday.

I use factor 30 face cream and then just rub a little bit on the backs of my hands. It lasts all day so no need to reapply.

QVC do great deals!

Ephiny · 27/03/2011 11:10

Always wear gloves in the winter, sunscreen/moisturiser with SPF the rest of the time, and no washing up ever! Works for me anyway :)

Also check the hand soap you're using, some of them can be quite harsh and irritating so it's worth getting one suitable for dry/sensitive skin.

CeliaFate · 27/03/2011 11:17

Also, use an anti-ageing serum on your hands before applying hand cream.

zisforzebra · 27/03/2011 17:58

Thanks everyone, Aveeno seems to be getting a big thumbs up so I'll give that a try too.

Pagwatch lol, as soon as I'd posted I knew that would be someone's answer Grin

Celia DS1 has a massive tub of Diprobase has he has Ichthyosis so I'll give it a go. Smile

Valium I don't think I have a latex allergy as I'm okay with condoms but do buy non-latex, flock free gloves anyway as the flock seems to make it worse.

Ephiny Lol at no washing up ever! I think DH might say that I was trying that approach already. Grin

Morag I had the stingy thing with Neutrogena hand cream once, it was horrible. Had to wash it off quickly.

I like either the Norweigian formula stuff or the bodyshop hemp stuff.

Before you do the washing up, slather you hands in your chosen moisturiser and then put the rubber gloves on. The heat from the washing up water will held the cream sink in.

Also, get a few pairs of cheap cotton cloves. Before you go to sleep at night, cover your hands in cream and put the cotton gloves on to sleep in. Does wonders.
