I love h and m, wears well and washes well. Bought a Biden jumper last year and won't bother again as it washed so badly but my h and m jumpers keep on going

maryjane71 · 24/03/2011 20:59

I love H&M! Their shift dresses are much better quality and cheaper than Zara's. Therefore I have loads Smile

I remember when it was called Hennes and the only branch in the country was on Piccadilly Circus

Lastyearsmodel · 24/03/2011 21:05

MaryJane! I still call them Hennes. Ah, memories - off up town with my clothes allowance. If your name refers to your year of birth, then like me you'll remember espadrilles from the last time round Grin.

Lastyearsmodel · 24/03/2011 21:07

PS I rate H&M (Hennes) too - weird returns policy for catalogue stuff though. Something about not being able to get a refund if you return to store?

maryjane71 · 24/03/2011 21:16

I still say Hennes too. And of course I remember espadrilles Grin. We went to London in the mid 80s and I wanted to buy a Hennes bikini I'd seen in a brand new magazine called More Wink
I have to say the bikinis were crap as was the entire store. Very Primark on a bad day. Much improved since Grin

sharbie · 24/03/2011 22:09

so i shd be ok if i order maxi dresses and maybe maxi skirt too??

maryjane71 · 24/03/2011 22:18

Yes, as long as you know your size. I know I'm a medium. The choices sharbie are xs, s, m, l and xl.
I seem to remember DD ordering online and trying to return in store, and it's a no-no.
Can you link to what you have ordered? I've been sent the brochure and am nosey Grin

sharbie · 24/03/2011 22:28

not done yet maryjane - i like all the maxi dresses and skirts so could be any of those

tried to link but failed

I remember Hennes on Oxford Circus, too! I bought a revolting very stylish grey and yellow shirt from there which I wore throughout my teenage years.

Current sizes come up a little small, I think; it is aimed at the scrawny teen market, so not very forgiving for bingo wings and muffin tops.

sharbie · 24/03/2011 22:43

right ds can't help me with linkys because its a flash presentation.sorry.

H&M is brilliant and has by far the best basics of anywhere, it all washes brilliantly and keeps shape perfectly. I swear by their plain tops and cardigans. I've also recently bought their jeans for the first time and been highly impressed.

maryjane71 · 24/03/2011 22:49

I stand corrected, it was Oxford Circus not Piccadilly. I agree Contreau re: the sizing. It is fab for the teens/students but equally good for their mums Smile aswell. That's why I love it

CointreauVersial · 24/03/2011 22:51

Kids stuff is pretty good too.

It was the only place I could find cheap but acceptably "fashionable" hoodies/shorts for 11yo DS1.

Celery · 25/03/2011 06:44

In our town we have H&M, New Look and Peacocks all next to each other. All much of a muchness to be honest, in quality and price. Although I like Peacocks the best. I don't know, I think the clothes seem slightly less cheap and a bit more stylish. Or maybe that's just the lighting in the shop.

DonaAna · 25/03/2011 11:27

H&M children's quality is pretty good (there are some occasional outliers), most of the things I've bought there have been worn by my 2 DDs and can still be handed down.

Adult's H&M is rubbish though. They look good in the catalogue but IRL the materials are subprime and the clothes look and feel cheap and nasty.

sharbie · 25/03/2011 12:08

just got matalan book through the door - there are some nice maxi dresses in there only £10 may have to go and investigate at weekend.like their stuff - quality not been an issue there.

I got home this evening and a H&M brochure and a matalan one was on the doormat. I agree with DonaAna to a degree, some of their stuff does look a bit tatty, and some of the stores can resemble a jumble sale. But like I said before, I love their dresses, never more than £30. You need to know where to look.

Sharbie, those maxis are lovely aren't they Smile

sharbie · 26/03/2011 21:23

they are maryjane - i'm hoping to go to matalan tomorrow and have a look - i think i will prob end up getting something from there and maybe order something from h&m too just to see how the quality and fit is. Smile
