If you wash your DC's hair with only water...

...what do you do if it needs a really good clean?

I don't use any products on DS's hair. I do give it a rub with the sock of oats which he has in his bath. Today, however, his hair still smells of last night's dinner that he rubbed into it, despite having wiped it with a flannel last night and scrubbed it with the oaty sock this morning.

I want to get him clean but I'm keen to avoid using any products on him, partly because he has eczema and partly because I want his hair to retain its natural oils so I don't have to get into the habit of using products on it.

Any suggestions?

i couldnt imagine not using shampoo on my kids! they would be minging!!! dd1 has eczema and i have found the best shampoo and conditioner for her are the ones by simple.

I still use Dentinox cradle cap shampoo on my DS who is 28 months. He doesn't have cradle cap but it seems to keep his hair clean, smells lovely and seems to be mild on his hair.

I never shampoo my hair (well, very occasionally, non sulphate always) but do use conditioner as a wash on mine and my daughters.

It's a method for curly hair maintenance and certainly your hair does not ming. My husband who has the nose of a bloodhound says our heads smell lovely and fresh.

Get a non-dimethicone/paraben conditioner and try that. It loosens dirt and grease but doesn't strip oils.

DD1 has eczema, but I have to wash her hair with shampoo as it she gets it filthy (from the garden, her food, playing in the fields, paint, playdo etc etc).

I've been using the Infaderm eczema conditioning shampoo for years, it's great. However, I was caught out at the swimming pool recently, when I'd forgotten DD's shampoo so used my pantene on her, which didn't cause any reaction (and very glossy hair). She has very sensitive skin too!

Thanks everyone. I'm a bit Blush that I didn't think of using conditioner, otchayaniye as I did the curly girl method for a bit and still use that sort of conditioner now.

And it just occurred to me that soapnut liquid would probably do the trick too, although I think conditioner is probably better.

IIRC, Simple toiletries still have SLS and other nasties in them. I use shampoo without parabens, SLS etc and I really struggled to find any sold in the high street (I got Waitrose baby ones in the end).

DS's hair definitely doesn't usually ming - it smells all natural and lovely.
